As we look back on a successful year, we recognize the impact individuals can make when working towards a shared vision. By every measure, the YMCA of Northern Utah is stronger than ever, evolving with the energy of its dedicated team, leaders, board of directors, and volunteers. We are grateful for the generosity and support of our community and donors who've helped us accomplish more than we could have imagined this year. Together, our programs are reaching wider communities, creating ripples of change for Utah's youth and their families. To carry out this important work, we're committed to building equitable and sustainable careers for our employees. We believe that passion breeds change, and we've seen first-hand how passionate staff can impact the families we serve. I am truly honored to support the YMCA of Northern Utah as a board member and volunteer. In the Y spirit, Andrea Barlow

Every week, our program teams take time to reflect on how they are making an impact on the lives of the kids in their programs. They think about the ups and downs of the week and often have incredible stories to share about how kids in their programs are learning, growing, and thriving. However, these stories are often about how kids impact our staff! Colleen, Site Coordinator for the YMCA's Afterschool program at Municipal Elementary, had this to share: "Blake is one of our soaring eagles at Municipal's After School Program here at the YMCA. His imagination is almost as tall as he is (and he is pretty tall for his age!) Blake is already an author, having written one book already, and he is bubbling with more stories every week, it seems! Blake's tenacity, intelligence, and humor are what have impacted me this past week. I am a substitute teacher in my off time, so I have the pleasure of meeting new faces often. When I walked into Municipal, Blake was one of the first little faces that greeted me. Blake was eager to tell me about his day and even more excited to tell me about the book he wrote! I was so impressed that he had such passion and joy surrounding his accomplishment. His spark motivated me to do a face-painting activity the next day with our After School Program kiddos. Guess what Blake chose when it was his turn to get his face painted? Yep... a superhero! Because, wouldn't you believe it?! Blake is just that type of kid! Blake's enthusiasm and excitement were contagious, and other kids in the program soon began to try new things on their own! During club times, kids made new friends and ventured out to try activities they'd never thought about before. From sports to dancing to a new kind of art, Blake inspired his peers to go after the things they wanted to try.

Healthy Eating is a vital part of each YMCA program. Many of our programs serve a hot meal each day along with morning and afterschool snacks. In some cases, apart from what they are served at school, this is the ONLY hot meal a child eats that day. At the Y, children get to try new fruits and vegetables, learn about portions, and are served meals family-style to encourage conversation and sharing.

The Y's Overnight Camps hosted a number of opportunities for marginalized communities to experience the outdoors up close. Their partnership with Camp Hope America allowed for children in or around domestic abuse to attend camp while receiving the mental health care they needed from professionals connected to their cases. We implemented Trauma-Informed Care across many of our programs and hosted a train-the-trainer event so that trauma-informed care is a sustainable initiative as new staff arrive on our team. Our Y implemented two mandatory YMCA of the USA Advancing Equity e-learnings for all current and new board members. Those training courses include: Key Concepts & Languages to use as we progress towards being an anti-racist organization, and Knowing My Role as a Board Member which discusses a board members vital role in promoting inclusion, diversity, equity, and access for all. We partnered with RocketTrike to gain a better understanding of how our staff, board, and families we serve see the Y's work around Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access. Cristian is a sweet and happy 4-year-old. He has attended the YMCA Preschool Program for 2 years. When he began Preschool he did not know any English and only used Spanish which he spoke in his home. His family was worried and asked if they should only speak English at home. Our teachers assured his family that they were fine and encouraged them to continue speaking Spanish at home and that his Preschool teachers would work on his English skill set in the classroom. After 2 years of hard work, Cristian is bilingual! His parents are proud of the skills he has learned. Cristian is an excellent example of how our YMCA works directly with families to tailor education for individual children. Today, Cristian uses complete sentences in both languages, and his sweet smile brings joy to his classroom daily!

At the YMCA of Northern Utah, we are proud to offer scholarships to families who need financial assistance to attend YMCA programs. In many cases, providing scholarships can be life changing for families. Because they can afford programs at the Y, they are able to get and maintain jobs throughout the day. This support helps to prevent homelessness and food insecurity and aims to end generational poverty for the families we serve.
