“Volim kada imam nekog ko će mi reći šta on vidi. Za mene dio uzbuđenja jeste upravo u ostvarivanju nečije vizije, jer kroz to uvijek naučiš nešto i to izaziva tvoju percepciju i tvoje stanje.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the art of film, actor Willem Dafoe was presented with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival.
Willem Dafoe: You’re Lucky to Have a Festival Like the Sarajevo Film Festival
Honorary Heart of Sarajevo
“I am very happy to be here; it is a true honor. You are very fortunate to have this film festival. Festivals are extremely important, now more than ever, because they keep cinema alive. We can never emphasize enough the positive power, both political and social, that film holds. I was here 25 years ago. Much has changed, but I am very glad to see Sarajevo thriving, just like the Sarajevo Film Festival. Thank you all”, said Dafoe The recognition was handed to him by Jovan Marjanović, Director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, ahead of the screening of “Birthday” by director Miguel Ángel Jiménez. “Tonight we present a very special award at the Sarajevo Film Festival. It's not every day that we welcome back an artist whose career has shaped every language of modern cinema. And yet, here we are, 25 years since he first came to Sarajevo, we honor an artist who has given us some of the most unforgettable characters, moments, and emotions in cinema. Willem Dafoe is one of those rare actors whose presence on screen is not simply a performance, it is a transformation. With over a hundred films spanning continents and genres, Hollywood blockbusters and independent gems, animation and theatre, Willem approaches each role with a fearlessness and curiosity that make him a true master of his craft. His body of work is something every actor aspires to, yet only a few can ever match his range, depth, and daring. Willem, when you first joined us here, Sarajevo was just finding its way after some very difficult years. Your presence then was a gesture of solidarity. Your return now, a quarter of a century later, is a reminder that art builds lasting connections, connections that survive time and distance”, said Jovan Marjanović. Before accepting the honorary award, Dafoe held a Masterclass in the morning, moderated by critic Neil Young. At the beginning, the actor recalled his first visit to the Sarajevo Film Festival, exactly 25 years ago, when Steve Buscemi's film "Animal Factory" was screened. He emphasized that, unlike Buscemi, a colleague and longtime friend whom he has known since his days as a firefighter, he has no ambition to try his hand at directing. "I love when I have someone who will tell me what they see. For me, part of the excitement is precisely in realizing someone's vision, because through that you always learn something and it challenges your perception and your state. I think the best things come from that ignorance," explained Dafoe. Moderator Neil Young began to chronologically "comb" Dafoe's life and career path, and the audience thus discovered many details from his childhood and growing up period, before his fame. "It was good to have a childhood in my hometown, but the second I became an adult I knew I wanted to leave there," confided the actor. This prompted him to move to New York, where he acted in the theater for a long time, because as he says: "At that time, for me, acting was theater. I didn't think about film then. When I was first called to act in a film, I remember calling a friend to ask him how much money I should ask for it. I never remember how much I was paid, I only remember the experience". Dafoe is an actor characterized by a variety of roles and genres, as well as an examination of the psychological and physical limits of human nature. He is also known from independent arthouse productions, but also from commercial Hollywood films. However, it seems that despite this, his roles are never ordinary. He has collaborated with David Lynch, Robert Eggers, Sean Baker. He has played the roles of Jesus Christ, the Antichrist, a vampire, the Green Goblin, a mad scientist, a Dutch painter. He also talked about how all this influenced him and what helps him get into the role. “When you have some kind of mask, it affects the experience of the role, it triggers something in you and your imagination, it instinctively changes the way you behave,” said Dafoe, referring in particular to the role of a vampire in the film “Shadow of the Vampire”, but also to the characters in the films “Spider-Man”, “Wild at Heart”, “The Last Temptation of Christ”. "I'm always looking for moments where you can be transformed. It frees you and teaches you how to live. If you do it honestly and bare, then the audience experiences the same in a certain way - I think that's the real power of the film," said Dafoe, explaining why he often chooses painful roles, stressing that, although they are painful, they pay off in the end, because what you get from them is much greater. Given the fact that he made more than 150 films, it was inevitable to ask whether he had seen them all and whether he would return to them. "In a way, it's the way I remember my life," he began, adding: "When I see a clip from one of my films, I don't remember that film so much as I remember the period of filming, what my life looked like then, what worries I had, where I lived, what I did, and so on. All this merges into one overall picture. Watching parts of my films, I remember my life." He highlighted the role in the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" as the role that perhaps had the most influence on him and his career, underlining that he does not have a favorite role, because he believes that it confines the actor to certain frameworks in which he compares everything he does with her and tries to repeat it in every subsequent one. Despite this, he singles out his role as Vincent Van Gogh in the film “At Eternity’s Gate” as a special experience, which taught him different ways of looking at things and brought him closer to nature, art, reading and painting. When talking about collaboration with directors, he expressed regret that he did not have the opportunity to work with Stanley Cubrick and highlighted working with Robert Eggers as quite productive, because “he knows how to draw you into a challenge and a world that maybe you initially did not think was for him”. He also revealed that the next film he is working on is with him. “There is something wonderful about submitting yourself to someone else’s vision and then having it become your vision”, he explained. In addition to his films, we also touched on unusual, but well-known, photoshoots. "You're using yourself as material, but you don't have a character, there's nothing to achieve. It gives you the opportunity to experiment with your body and different poses," Dafoe explained, adding that he finds it interesting to play with those elements. "I appreciate that the art of film is a joint effort", are the words spoken by Willem Dafoe during the Masterclass, and through them can perhaps be best explained his successful collaborations with numerous artists, who seem to be completely different from each other.

Dominik Moll
Sarajevo Film Festivalu. GRAND COFFEE WITH...
French director Dominik Moll was a guest of the Grand Kafa sa… programme at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival. The night before, festival audiences had the chance to see his latest film “Case 137” at the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema. Just as much as the film delighted the audience, the audience, in turn, delighted him. Amazed that his film was screened in front of an audience of three thousand people, the director noted that he had never had so many viewers at one of his screenings, not even in Cannes, where his films are often shown. Screenings and festivals such as Cannes and Sarajevo, he said, are of great importance to filmmakers. “Festivals are crucial for me because they are often the first contact a new film has with the audience and critics. Only then can we really see what we have done,” Moll said. “Case 137” tells the story of the police during the turbulent demonstrations that became known as the “Yellow Vest Protests,” when citizens expressed their discontent with the French government. “The protests were interesting to me, but I was even more intrigued by the internal relations within the police during those events. When we talk about police films, they usually show the police investigating cases committed by criminals, but here we’re dealing with an investigation within the police itself. I wanted to show the uncomfortable position of officers who are forced to investigate their own colleagues.” The lead role of Stéphanie, a police officer who must investigate her fellow officers, is played by Léa Drucker. Just as important as portraying the internal conflicts within the police, Moll said it was vital for him to place a woman at the center of the story. “Women are not often the protagonists in police films. They are a minority in these institutions, so it was important for me to show that aspect of police work. The heroine is often underestimated by her male colleagues because of her gender, and she constantly has to prove herself,” he explained, sharing what drew him to the character. In preparing for the film, he researched both the protests and the work of the police in detail. “I felt a great responsibility because I was making a film inspired by real events. It is fiction, but I had to be fair to all the people who actually protested in the streets. I hope this film will draw attention to important problems in our society,” said French director Dominik Moll. Goran Ivanišević u egzibicionom meču pod pokroviteljstvom Sarajevo Film Festivala i UNIQA osiguranja
FILM I SPORT

Goran Ivanišević in an Exhibition Match Sponsored by the Sarajevo Film Festival and UNIQA Insurance
As part of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, and in collaboration with UNIQA Insurance, an exhibition tennis match was held on Franc Lehár Street in the heart of Sarajevo, featuring the legendary tennis player and Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanišević.
Ivanišević, brand ambassador of UNIQA Insurance, began the event by advising young people to listen more to their mentors, coaches, and parents, stressing that they know best, even if it doesn’t always seem that way. He then took to the improvised street court in front of the Cineplexx cinema. Among his opponents were actors Tarik Filipović and Branko Đurić, TV host Joško Lokas, international friends of the festival, as well as Ivanišević’s wife Nives. The biggest delight came when young athletes from the region, many of them children, stepped onto the court, with Ivanišević praising their talent in particular.

izazovi budućeg prosperiteta
Zeleni klub i Sarajevo Film Festival, uz partnerstvo i podršku UNDP-a BiH, organizirali su međunarodnu konferenciju „Klimatske promjene – izazovi budućeg prosperiteta“.
Klimatske promjene
Konferencija „Klimatske promjene – izazovi budućeg prosperiteta“ održana je u zgradi Parlamentarne skupštine Bosne i Hercegovine, a paneliste i goste konferencije pozdravili su Saša Magazinović, poslanik u Predstavničkom domu PSBiH, predsjednik Zelenog kluba, Renaud Meyer, rezidentni predstavnik UNDP-a u Bosni i Hercegovini i Jovan Marjanović, direktor Sarajevo Film Festivala. Konferencija „Klimatske promjene – izazovi budućeg prosperiteta“ održana je u zgradi Parlamentarne skupštine Bosne i Hercegovine, a paneliste i goste konferencije pozdravili su Saša Magazinović, poslanik u Predstavničkom domu PSBiH, predsjednik Zelenog kluba, Renaud Meyer, rezidentni predstavnik UNDP-a u Bosni i Hercegovini i Jovan Marjanović, direktor Sarajevo Film Festivala.
Film Has the Power Not Only to Tell Stories, but to Shape a Better Tomorrow
Climate Change -Challenges of Future Prosperity
The Green Club and the Sarajevo Film Festival, with the partnership and support of UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized the international conference “Climate Change – Challenges of Future Prosperity.”
The conference “Climate Change – Challenges of Future Prosperity” was held at the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was opened with greetings from Saša Magazinović, Member of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH and President of the Green Club, Renaud Meyer, UNDP Resident Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Jovan Marjanović, Director of the Sarajevo Film Festival. It was an opportunity, in the context of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival as one of the largest cultural events in the region, and with the presence of members of parliaments and green parliamentary groups from the region, cultural workers, representatives of the executive and legislative branches, leaders of private and public companies, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, NGOs and activists, to discuss the consequences of climate change and the necessity of regional and broader cooperation on concrete activities for environmental protection. “Humanity has never defeated nature. Power is something that gives us the strength and possibility to speak about the things that matter: about climate and climate change, and the impact they have on our lives. The Sarajevo Film Festival is not just a film event, but a platform from which the voice carries loud and far. We still have not found a balance between our economic stability and living in harmony with nature. This conference is an opportunity to realize a vision and idea of the future and sustainability, of a way for culture, politics, science, and activism to be together in the same mission – only through united forces can we change what is happening when it comes to sustainability,” said Magazinović. “The Sarajevo Film Festival is not just about film and entertainment, but also a strong platform for conveying messages of social importance – recognizing culture and film as drivers of social change. It goes beyond cinematography itself, enriching all the accompanying initiatives and processes that develop around it. Our role as UNDP is to support such initiatives, to be a partner to decision-makers, and to build solutions together for the greatest climate challenges of our time. I am especially encouraged that this year’s conference gave space to young people, through a panel that highlights their key role in connecting local initiatives with global climate solutions,” said Meyer. As part of the conference, a panel was organized on the role of youth in decision-making processes related to environmental protection. This panel was held within the framework of the Dialogue for the Future 3 initiative, jointly implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, and UNESCO on behalf of the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in partnership with the Presidency of BiH and the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH, with financial support from the UN Peacebuilding Fund. Sarajevo Film Festival Director Jovan Marjanović pointed to the Festival’s concrete activities regarding sustainability: “As one of the largest cultural events in this part of Europe, the Festival has a significant social, economic, and cultural impact. Our sustainability policy means that this impact must be positive – socially, economically, and ecologically. When it comes to ecological responsibility, we are working on two parallel fronts: first, to reduce our own ecological footprint, and second, to inspire and raise awareness of ecological challenges. This shows that film has the power not only to tell stories, but also to shape a better tomorrow. In this way, the Festival actively contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with the EU Mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities,” said Marjanović. Thus, CineLink Industry Days, the Sarajevo Film Festival’s business platform, was last year among the first events in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be certified as an environmentally sustainable event, and this year is undergoing recertification. The Festival has launched numerous concrete activities with the support of public institutions and organizations as well as private sponsors and partners: free public transport in the evenings and at night, as well as for commercial rides; the Festival uses a fleet of electric vehicles; digital accreditations and invitations have been introduced; waste separation is being implemented at festival venues; all festival locations use LED lighting and 4K laser projectors that meet strict energy-saving standards. In addition, by closing central streets, pedestrian zones are created. There is also the Films for Future competition, in cooperation with the Green Club, which empowers young people to tell their own stories about sustainability. Through the Ecoscope program, especially on Earth Day, the Festival involves audiences in year-round discussions on climate and environmental protection. “Our goal is clear: for the Sarajevo Film Festival not to be only a celebration of film, but also a driver of a sustainable future,” concluded Marjanović. Film STAVI SVOJU DUŠU NA DLAN I HODAJ odgovor je njegove autorice na tekući masakr Palestinaca. PUT YOUR SOUL ON YOUR HAND AND WALK is a filmmaker's response to the ongoing massacre of Palestinians. A miracle happened when director Sepideh Farsi met Fatima Hassona. Hassona became the filmmaker's eyes in Gaza, where she resisted while documenting the war, as Farsi became a link between Hassona and the world at large from what she calls her "Gaza prison." The two maintained this lifeline for almost a year. The bits of sound and pixel they exchanged became this film. The death of Fatima, on 16 April 2025, as a result of an Israeli raid on her home, changes its meaning forever.
