Career Journeys and Opportunities for PhDs: A Talk by the VP of Research at Mines, April 24th, 12:00-1:30pm Dr. Walter Copan, Vice President of Research (VPRTT) at Mines, will give a talk on career journeys and opportunities for graduate students and postdocs. Dr. Copan serves as the VP for research and technology transfer at Mines, and previously served as the 16th director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a position to which he was confirmed unanimously by the Senate. ARPA-E is an agency within the Department of Energy that funds high-risk, high-impact energy technologies. We are looking for creative early-career scientists and engineers to help direct the future of American energy innovation. This is a prestigious, two-year, full-time, paid federal position in Washington, D.C. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & SCHOLAR SERVICES (ISSS) Mid Semester Reminders for International Students: Address Changes: All students should take a moment (right now!) to check that their address is up to date in Trailhead. If you are arriving in Colorado for the first time, or have moved to a new residence, you will need to update the address within 10 days of your move/arrival. This is a requirement of the F and J visas. Check your I-20 or DS-2019 end date! If your form end date is coming up but you will not be graduating, you will need to request an extension through your international student portal BEFORE your form expires. As a reminder, your I-20 or DS-2019 cannot expire while you are in the U.S. studying. OPT Applications (F-1 Students Only): If you will be finishing your program this spring and want to apply for OPT the deadline is fast approaching. Apply through the ISSS Portal and review information about OPT here. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) (F-1 Students Only): NEW! Beginning Fall 2023, the process for applying for CPT changed at Mines. For more information visit here. All students must enroll in a credited course as part of participating in CPT. Depending on your courseload - the additional credit(s) may incur additional costs. Please note that you are not permitted to begin any off campus employment until you have CPT approval on your I20. Our office is available to answer any questions. Email us at isss@mines.edu Taxes: The deadline for tax filing in the U.S. is April 15. Everyone who was present in the US in the previous calendar year must file some document with the IRS, even if you did not receive income. Nonresidents who received income must file their tax return by the deadline. If you did not receive income last year, you must still file the Form 8843 showing that you are exempt from taxes. Colorado School of Mines has arranged access to Sprintax for you. Sprintax will guide you through the tax preparation process, arrange the necessary documents and check if you’re due a tax refund. This software is available to anyone who is a nonresident for tax purposes. If you are a resident for tax purposes, Sprintax cannot offer services (the software will help you check if you are considered a resident or not). The fee is covered for federal tax returns only. TREFNY CENTER Are you a graduate student or postdoc who is interested in teaching and learning? The College Teaching Certificate Program (CTC) is a yearlong, application-based learning cohort that is open to graduate students and postdocs who are interested in developing their teaching practice within the contexts of higher education. CAREER CENTER March 26, 5:30-7:30pm, Petroleum Hall Semiconductor Industry Panel The Career Center and CS Department are hosting a Semiconductor Industry Panel to help students and recent graduates learn about career paths that revolve around the semiconductor life cycle (i.e., fabrication, distribution, and application and design). The panel will have a Q&A segment and a networking portion. Food will be provided! UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH Calling all graduate students! The Office of Undergraduate Research Scholars is looking for volunteers to serve as Judges during the Undergraduate Research Symposium April 17th and 18th. Judges commit to a 1.5 hour block (for poster judging; April 17th) or a 1 hour block (for oral presentation judging; April 18th). This is a great professional development opportunity, and we are happy to produce a letter recognizing this service for any graduate student judge. Using case studies and Mines's recently revised Authorship Guidelines, this workshop will help participants answer questions such as: What ethical standards exist for determining authorship credit? You must be a senior-level Ph.D. candidate, postdoctoral researcher, or an early career scientist or researcher in the field of Engineering.
