YMCA CAMP ROGER
YMCA Camp Roger Families, I hope this email finds you well and ready to enjoy the beautiful summer. We are so excited for our season at YMCA Camp Roger and have an important update for you. Starting on August 1st, the US Forest Service is going to begin construction on the bridge that we use to access Camp Roger from highway 151. Additionally, they will not be adding a temporary bridge while the original one is under construction. Therefore, we have had to reassess some of the policies and procedures of camp to make sure that we still provide an incredible experience for you and your campers. Camp will still be operating during Session 9 (July 29th – August 1st). However, we will be making some changes and continue to update you all as we finalize them. For starters, here are the basic need to knows for your experience at YMCA Camp Roger: Check-Out on August 2nd will be entirely off-site in Kamas, UT. While we are still working with our bussing provider to create the details, we will be running staggered operations to pick up and drop off campers and bus them to camp, via Highway 35 and the Soapstone Pass. Normally, we have the option to either go to the pool or hike Moose Mountain on Thursdays. During these sessions, we will not be attending the pool as the extended travel time to and from would mean your camper(s) would have to spend much of their last day at camp on a bus, and we want them to be having fun at camp instead! Jake and the team at Camp Roger will be developing an alternative water-based programming option at camp to still enjoy splashing around during the hot summer days. We have identified that the response time for emergency services will be longer than normal – so we are working with local emergency services to readjust our policies for those weeks so that we appropriately respond to this change in time in all our emergency response standard operating procedures. We recognize that this will create a different feel for campers, staff, and caregivers to those weeks at Camp Roger – however, camps all over the world bus their campers into their facilities that are further away from local communities, and we are confident and comfortable with our ability to safely host camp – we will just be “a little further away” from Kamas. We also understand that there will be concerns or conflicts with this adaptation – any registered participant that would like to move their registration to a different session week at YMCA Camp Roger or move to the parallel week at YMCA Mill Hollow, will be able to transfer their deposits and payments as needed. Just like with any week at camp, we will be sharing check-in and check-out details prior to the start of the session (and in this unique case, we will be extra forward in providing these details once we have them finalized) so that check-out and check-in will be just as smooth for our families! Please do not hesitate to reach out, and we greatly appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we adapt to the conditions we are working with. Yours in Camping, Ben Wittig Director of Camping bwittig@ymcautah.org
