YMCA RECEIVES TRANSFORMATIVE $2M GIFT FROM MACKENZIE SCOTT
YMCA OF NORTHERN UTAH
Premiere Issue | Winter 2022
CEO MESSAGE
We are excited to share about the expansion of our Preschool Program in 2021 and who we have to thank for making it possible. The YMCA Preschool Program aims to provide affordable, quality preschool for all children regardless of their background and prepare children for kindergarten. In the 2020 – 2021 school year, we served over 80 children in our Preschool Program. Of these, 87% came from low- to moderate-income households and 83% received financial assistance. Staff, parents, and children have shared their joy as children develop socially and emotionally; learn to recognize numbers, letters, words, and colors; improve their behavior and learn classroom routines; and improve their communication skills. This year, we set out to expand our Preschool Program to reach more youth and families who could benefit from it. Hillcrest Elementary was the ideal place to expand our program and open a new site, which we opened at the beginning of the 2021 – 2022 school year. This expansion could not have happened without the support of Big West Oil and Maverik. Over the past five years, Big West Oil and Maverik have contributed to giving over $6 million in scholarships and donations to education programs in the state of Utah. They share our goal to prepare children for kindergarten and set children on a positive trajectory for education and development. Another foundation we must thank is the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation. The Emma Eccles Jones Foundation has been giving since 1972 and readily supported the expansion and our goals to offer enriching, affordable, quality programs to the most vulnerable in the community and help young children gain a lifelong love of learning. Director Ellen Rossi says, “It’s so important for children to have a safe space where they can learn and play with other children their age, and the YMCA does a great job to make sure anyone can participate.”
The YMCA of Northern Utah is the proud recipient of $2 million from the Mackenzie Scott Foundation. We want to make sure that plans for the gift were deliberate, purpose-driven, and incredibly impactful for the community. “We are incredibly humbled by Ms. Scott’s investment in our community,” said YMCA of Northern Utah CEO Richard West. “This gift, combined with the local support from our community partners and donors, along with the continued work of our staff and volunteers, will allow our YMCA to make critical investments right back into the community we serve now.” Our desire, along with Scott’s, is to make the biggest impact we can with the donation in our community. Our plans are to use this gift to think big picture and plan strategically so that our community experiences lasting impact. As we look for new and sustainable ways to meet community needs, we can do so knowing that our mission to “build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities,” is unwavering. The YMCA Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team have thoughtfully planned how to reinvest these dollars directly back into the community to make the most impact. “The important thing we wanted to keep in mind was how we were going to make each dollar work for the most good. We didn’t want to rely on this gift to support programs that are already in place, but instead to stretch the $2 million gift to make a long-lasting, sustainable impact on our communities,” says Rich West. To strategically reinvest this gift, the YMCA of Northern Utah plans to split it into four major components: residential camp investments at YMCA Camp Roger and YMCA Mill Hollow; an endowment fund to provide a permanent source of income, financial sustainability, and long-term viability; furthering the efforts of the Y in Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access; and establishing an innovation fund to its ability to operate in and serve our increasingly diverse and changing communities. The YMCA plans to launch a specialized campaign focusing on these four areas to raise an additional $3 million and leverage the gift from Ms. Scott into something that will transform not on the YMCA of Northern Utah but each of the communities it serves. As a leading nonprofit, the Y depends on donors, grants, and program fees to operate. After the upheaval of 2020 and 2021, this gift will help us broaden the scope of our outreach programs and plan for the future. The Y will still continue to lean on its annual donors to help the community access critical Y services. We are forever grateful for Ms. Scott’s gift and the transformative impact it will have on the families in Northern Utah.
DONOR HIGHLIGHT: MARK BROUSE
The new year is a wonderful time to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and look forward to exciting times ahead for the Y! You have contributed so much to our success, and I want to welcome you to our Donor Newsletter, where we will share the impact of the work you have made possible. The most thrilling news is navigating and recovering from the pandemic and being there for children of all backgrounds, helping them thrive when so many children struggle. We served 2,433 kids in our Camps and 1,555 in our Preschool and Afterschool Programs in 2021. While there is much to be thankful for in the past year, and with your help we can meet a vision to more than double our impact in 2022! Our strategic plan will see a livable wage for all YMCA staff, program growth, and capital investments to launch the Y into a new era. I look back on 2021 with gratitude for you and the difference you’ve made in children’s lives. Let’s look forward to a transformative 2022! With Gratitude, Rich West, CEO
Mark served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Northern Utah from July 2000 to June 2018. In his tenure, he held nearly every position from fund development committee member to Board President. Mark came to the board bringing years of entrepreneurial expertise as the co-founder of VISTA Staffing Solutions, the physician staffing division of On Assignment, one of the largest healthcare and scientific staffing companies in the nation. After selling VISTA, Mark retired in 2012 to focus on philanthropy and spending more time with family and friends. Mark loves to travel with his wife Lynn and visit their two children Kelly and Mitchell. Mark and Lynn manage the Hoffman-Brouse Foundation and have contributed many transformational gifts to the Y both personally and through the foundation. When asked to reflect on his service on the YMCA board and his philanthropic giving Mark said, “It fulfills that part of me that believes we all have an obligation to serve others, and I feel like I have made a real contribution and that the things I have done have had a positive impact on the community.” Mark encourages all to visit the YMCA Community Family Centers (located in Taylorsville and Ogden) to see the kids and staff in action and witness the impact the Y has in our community. “Everyone wants their money to have a great impact, but understanding how a small gift has a large impact at the Y is critical for any donor. I encourage everyone to consider what impact they are trying to have and encourage them to go to the Y to see the impact.”
