August Meeting Recap by Rosamond Trujillio Blevins
Oktoberfest in La Mesa by Merrill Perry
My name is Merrill Perry, Events Coordinator, for the La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club. Every year our club participates in the La Mesa Oktoberfest, one of the largest, if not the largest Oktoberfest events in the County of San Diego. We sponsor a booth every year so we can register potential voters, engage with the public regarding politics, and introduce Democratic candidates to the public, event participants and vendors. This year we will have Democratic paraphernalia and Harris/Walz campaign items. Additionally, multiple east county Democratic clubs will be participating with us. Oktoberfest is an incredible means by which a candidate for any position can derive broad public exposure, pass out flyers, and actually speak to voters. La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club, East County Democratic Club, Spring Valley-Lemon Grove Democratic Club, San Diego Young Democrats, Alliance for Democracy of East County, San Diego County Women’s Democratic Club, and East County Caucus would like you to join us at our booth for any of the following dates and times: Friday 10/4/24 from 4pm to 10pm • Saturday 10/5/24 from 10am to 10pm • Sunday 10/6/24 from 12pm to 8pm We will be posting the schedules of all candidates who attend for public review and participation. This is real politics on a personal basis. This is the time to get out and meet the public. This is “old time” campaigning! Please put this event on your calendar and let us know if you will attend. Don’t pass up a good time or a good opportunity! Happy Trails, Merrill Perry, Events Coordinator La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club mynylacat@gmail.com lmfdemclub@gmail.com
In just a few weeks it will be November 5th. Can you believe it? Hopefully, you’re anticipating voting on your mail-in ballot and are anxiously awaiting the results of the election. But, what if Trump wins? What are the guardrails that can prevent the frightening Project 2025 from being implemented? What must we do NOW to protect our democracy? Let’s start with the guardrails that protect our country from Trump: What is a guardrail? It’s a fence that keeps you from falling into the abyss. What are these particular guardrails to protect us from Trump and how can they keep us from falling into the tar pit? Just to Here are the three important points that influence the success or failure of the guardrails: The outcome of the election for Congress Trump’s choices of appointees Loyalty of governmental people to America and the Constitution There are essentially two types of guardrails: Governmental, supported by all the people in the federal government, and Local championed by the masses of people In America’s states across the nation. The Governmental guardrails: Executive Appointees. Each governmental appointee must be approved by the Senate which has the power to approve or disapprove the appointee. Also, will the appointees choose to be faithful to Trump or choose to defend the country and the Constitution bucking Trump? To correct the mistakes of his first term where many appointees bucked Trump, Trump’s team of Project 2025 advisors is busy thwarting Trump’s poor choices of past appointees, preselecting potential judges, directors of departments such as the Department of Justice, thus giving Trump, potentially, enormous power. Career civil service employees. Known to be loyal to America and the constitution, these civil servants countered the orders of the earlier Trump presidency resulting in failed plans. The Trump team is working on creating a huge database of pre-qualified civil servant applicants loyal only to Trump who will replace all the "lifetime" civil servants of the US government that Trump will fire. Members of the US House and the US Senate. Most of these elected members think for themselves and work for their constituents back home. As a block to Trump’s legislative threats to our Country, Senators vote against Trump’s plans. The Senators also vote for or against all the people Trump appoints. With deep pockets of Trump’s billionaire friends and supporters, some members of congress have been bought for their votes. Also, Trump Senators have been directly influenced to reject legislation that they had negotiated to pass the bill by a single Trump phone call to the Republican Senators. The Department of Justice and all the Federal courts are appointed by the politically elected President, but generally follow the law and the Constitution to take precedence over Trump’s political demands. Trump allies and advisors are busy finding suitably POLITICAL judges and lawyers to be placed in the courts under his rule. The Supreme Court is a perfect example, especially considering the immunity ruling. The Local Guardrails Now, the other guardrails are our own LOCAL guardrails. State by state there are courts, and state governments, county governments, city governments, town governments all elected by the people, all making decisions about our lives, our children’s lives. The Local effect People like you populate the state and local governments and, for the most part, are loyal to their constituents’ objectives. If not, they are voted out. They are also loyal to the laws of their jurisdictions and to America and the Constitution. Trump has been less successful at influencing the inhabitants of Local Courts and jurisdictions. But the Trump-loyal Republicans are working hard to change this. The press The press used to be more objective about coverage of politics. But with a little work, we can bring them around again to be respectful of all sides of an issue. Trump’s 2025 cronies have purchased the National news and you can see how different the depth of coverage from one candidate to another nationally. Fortunately, the local press is not so bad. So with all the terrifying shenanigans of the Trump team, what do we do to thwart America’s takeover? First, to put all of the Trump threats in the scrap heap, we must elect Kamala Harris as President. Secondly, we must add Democrats to the Senate and the House. Third, elect local Democrats across the board at all levels. To these ends, you know what needs to be done. It’s hard work. We will all be exhausted on November 6th but hopefully it will be a good exhaustion, one that you can say, “I helped preserve our American democracy and I’m damn proud of that!” Suzanne Hansen President of Alliance Democracy for East County
What if Trump wins? by Suzanne Hansen by Katie Sigeti
Thanks to Democrats on all levels of involvement in our election, the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 has become a major talking point for Democratic candidates to inform Americans about the downfall of Democracy that comes with the project. I originally heard about Project 2025 through TikTok over a year ago; members of Gen Z were hoping to get the news out about something that was considered hidden from most of the public. Then it was brought to Democratic Clubs like ours, and then through Media and word of mouth, people are becoming informed. Now, less than 100 days before the election, Harris is talking about it on the national stage at her campaign rallies. As the talk of Project 2025 rises, interest in learning more about the Conservative agenda is rising, The Heritage Foundation’s training videos on Project 2025 have leaked. The videos show the same-old conservative talking points but also lead with training as to how to take down Democracy as quickly as possible. This all happens as Trump has tried to distance himself from Project 2025, as concerns about the Heritage Foundation rise. Just a couple of days ago, co-author of Project 2025, Russel Vought spoke with who he thought they were rich investors- but were actually undercover journalists. In the interview, Vought speaks on the contents of Project 2025- very blatantly so. Openly expressing a desire for immigration and pornography restriction, and his hopes for a Christian nation. Vought also expressed that Trump is behind Project 2025- stating that Trump’s distancing from the document during campaigns and on social media is “graduate level politics”, and confirmed that Trump has fundraised and donated for the Foundation on multiple occasions. As we look onto the short time that we have left before the campaign begins, we must remember to keep telling those close to us about the ongoing threat to our democracy. We must motivate others to continue their investigating, educating, and community organizing. The more we discuss Project 2025 is the more we expose what Trump’s ideal nation could look like. So,keep informing your loved ones about the importance of voting in this election, because we are all we’ve got. We lost a hero, friend, and a warrior when Becca Taylor died from her injuries in a motorcycle accident in July. Becca has been serving as Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party since 2022. As Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party she stepped in and stepped up when we really needed it. I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with a number of our County Party Chairs on the E-Board and through campaigns: Jess, Francine, Jessica, Will, and Becca. They’re all the best. Amazing people serving in a position that is the equivalent of a full-time position, but is unpaid. It makes you a target for every grievance possible with everyone and anyone associated with the Democratic Party. Becca got along with everyone, earned everyone’s respect, made us all better, helped us win, and had a lot of fun along the way. Thank you to staff, the E-Bd, and IBEW Local 569 for organizing a very emotional and respectful memorial held at the Local 569 Union Hall. Fitting, since that was the last place the entire Central Committee met in person. Heavy hitters showed up to pay tribute. A lot of stories about her organizing chops and her smile. That smile. Becca’s smile doesn’t just light up a room; it electrifies it! Freakin’ Obcean. What a beautiful human being. Becca’s peers, electeds, candidates, consultants, and volunteers she mentored all had these great stories about her. Very emotional. It was a showcase for the wave of talent that propells the San Diego County Democratic Party. Democrats run San Diego. We own it. The future is very bright for the Democratic Party in San Diego County. We’re in good hands. We’ve come a long way since Eleanor and Poppy volunteer staffed a one room office in Clairemont to hand out yard signs. We’re OK. We’re good. We’re poised to gain ground in our East and Inland North Areas. Becca gets credit for moving that progress along. Thank you Becca! Rest in Peace. Becca Taylor: The Best. by Chris Pearson
Food Prices by Eugene Mulally
While CPI measured inflation has dropped below 3%, Kamala Harris targets rising food prices as a continuing burden that needs to be addressed. An August 23 "Financial Times" editorial reports "food prices have risen about 25% since March 2020". In a newsletter from Robert Reich (8/15/25), former President Clinton’s Secretary of Labor reports "food prices remain high because there’s little to no competition across the entire food supply chain, which has allowed big corporations to engage in a price gouging free-for-all". Reich notes that “four companies control most food industries, allowing them to coordinate prices instead of competing on the basis of lower prices." The Price Gouging Prevention Act of 2024 is already in the legislative process. It aims to provide the Federal Trade Commission with $1 billion of funding to address these specific problems. Reich urges Harris to "bust up the food monopolies, to prevent corporations in the food and grocery industries from unfairly jacking up prices on consumers. La Mesa Police Working with the Community by Janet Castaños
La Mesa Community Police Oversight Board and the La Mesa Police Department Working Hand-in-hand With the Community it Serves The Community Police Oversight Board (CPOB) for the City of La Mesa has been in operation since early 2021 as a result of the diligent efforts of a small group of community advocates who believe in the importance of building trust, improving transparency, and providing a liaison between the citizens and our Police Department. This process has proved to be very rewarding and productive thanks to the collaborative efforts of Police Chief Ray Sweeney, the La Mesa Police Officers Association, and the members of the Community Police Oversight Board. As the former Chair and current Vice Chair of the Community Police Oversight Board, I have learned many positive aspects of effective leadership from our Chief of Police Ray Sweeney. It is through his leadership and collaborative efforts that La Mesa has the oversight body that is the envy of cities across the county. All civic leaders should strive to emulate our Police Chief’s leadership skills which include the following: Treat community members with respect – Chief Sweeney actively engages with the public even when there is extreme pressure placed upon him such as that following the 2020 riot. He listens to the concerns brought forward by community members and works hard to respond to the people he serves with respect and honesty. He approaches tough questions head-on and makes every effort to make sure the person asking the question receives an honest and thorough response. Follow through on promises – When promises are made to the CPOB, we can always count on Chief Sweeney to follow-through. He doesn’t say one thing in public and then another thing behind the scenes. He is a man of his word. Represent the City with integrity – The Chief is always willing to support and protect the people of this community. He cares about those in need and encourages his officers to take the time to de-escalate every encounter they might face in an effort to find the appropriate resources and support. He represents the Police Department and the City well. Be proactive – The LMPD learned from the May 2020 riots that a proactive response plan is crucial to more effective outcomes. Chief Sweeney immediately developed a plan for improvement to more effectively respond to safety concerns in the City. His response to the aftermath of the riot was immediate and healing. Respond to situations in a legal and ethical manner – Chief Sweeney not only considers the legal aspects of his decisions but also the ethical. When he acts on issues, he listens to all points of view prior to making an informed, legal, and ethical decision. All these leadership qualities make the success of the Community Police Oversight Board in La Mesa possible. We feel heard and appreciated. Since its inception, CPOB has worked hard to develop a citizen complaint process that is readily available to the people who come in contact with the LMPD personnel. As these complaints are received, they are reviewed by the police department, by the CPOB, and by the independent police auditor (outside auditor hired to report out to the CPOB). A final report is created and made available to the public on the CPOB website. While the department had typically received between seven to twelve complaints a year, it is worth noting that there have been no (zero) community complaints submitted in 2024 to date. This is very significant because, even though the complaint process is more readily available and easier to use, there has been a decrease in citizen complaints against officers. The officers in the field are following the Chief’s and Captains’ lead to instill peaceful resolutions to problems and concerns whenever possible. The recent approval of the CPOB’s Mediation Process to provide citizens and officers with a trained professional to assist in mediating concerns, misunderstandings, or misperceptions will also greatly benefit the City and Police Department by reducing legal actions and investigative reviews. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Chief, the Police Officers Association, and the current CPOB Chair Leroy Johnson, this Mediation Process is now a reality. In addition, the Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement (HOME) program is another example of how the LMPD has reached out to our community members to provide the necessary support and services to assist people who are down on their luck. Sometimes all that’s needed is a helping hand and caring support to get them back on track. The CPOB greatly supports this effort. The La Mesa CPOB and Police Department have formed a community of collaborative and supportive public servants. Together we reach out to our neighbors who are in need of public safety support and services. Together we appreciate and even value the diversity within our community as we continue to grow in knowledge and understanding because of our unique differences. We are in this together as we continue to grow into the community we envision. Janet Castaños Board Member at Large, La Mesa Foothills Democratic Club

Hey! Old White Dudes: Vote for Harris. You’ll have more money. I’m an old White Dude; and I’m voting for Harris. I’m calling on all my fellow old White Dudes to do the same. I’m still in touch with friends from Elementary School, Jr. High, and High School who are now Old White Dudes like me. Some of them are surviving on social security, Medicare, and a stingy 401k. Some have health problems. It’s rough. Some are part of the MAGA mob and cult. Voting for Trump is voting against your own self-interest. Switch to Harris. Trump will cut social security and Medicare. His economic policies (tariffs and tax cuts for the rich) will devastate your 401k. It’s trickle-down economics. Trickle. Harris will protect social security and Medicare. Democrats grow the economy from the bottom up and the middle out. Old White Dudes need to get over their racism and sexism that inhibits support for Harris. She’s better for us. Get over it. Old White Dudes are getting on board for Harris everywhere. Over $4M raised by 200,000 online and another 170,000 & counting on YouTube. Jeff Bridges from The Big Lebowski kicked it off by stating: “I’m White, I’m the Dude, and I’m for Harris.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7V-zdFL5vRM Harris is more moderate. She learned to drive right down the middle of the road. Trump and Vance are far right radicals who play on stoking hate and fear. I don’t trust these guys with the keys to my truck. They’ll drive us right off the cliff, pedal to the metal. Old White Dudes: Vote for Harris. Tell your friends. Chris Pearson, PD, LMFDC

Old White Dudes for Harris by Chris Pearson
My First National Convention by Tina Rynberg
My very first convention experience was delightful. I should have known we’d be well treated, when volunteers met us at the airport and led us through the labyrinth that is Midway Airport to find the right L Train, to get on the correct shuttle, and to our hotel. At every step of our journey, the volunteers of Chicago treated us extremely well. My husband was concerned about my well-being at the convention, as a woman alone. I had to tell him I’d rarely been so well taken care of in my life. Redundancies upon redundancies were built into the security system. We got new credentials every day (required photo ID for it), and our credentials were checked constantly. Nights 2-4 of the convention, Californians had uniquely colored wristbands each night, as our delegate place was on the floor and much coveted. Shuttles going to the convention center had an armed CPD officer on board, were driven through tents so bomb-sniffing dogs could circle the entire bus at least once, and while waiting for security to get into the center, helicopters circled overhead. There were Chicago PD, Secret Service, Homeland Security, and Capitol Police there. In my 6 days in Chicago, I NEVER SAW a single protester. Every place we went, we were instead welcomed by enthusiastic Chicagoans cheering us on. The feeling inside the convention center each night was sheer joy, almost giddiness. Thousands upon thousands of people gathered from all over the world (yes, I met some Democrats abroad), all states, all there for one purpose, to witness history. The Democrats REALLY can put on a show. We had Pink, Stevie Wonder, Oprah, the Chicks (previously Dixie Chicks), John Legend, Sheila E, and of course the Obamas, the Clintons, and others. There were adorable kids (Kamala’s nieces, Walz’s kids, and others) there, wise party elders, and enthusiastic young people. The chairs were uncomfortable, for some reason I was invisible (each night I was shoved aside by men wanting to get past me. At the airport I was so appreciative of polite people waiting patiently), we were told sometimes that if we left the center (for restrooms, food, water etc.) we may not have been able to get in again, and it was still back-aching, bladder busting, hungry and thirsty joy. People watching on TV probably had a better view of what was going on inside the center, but the electricity in the air and joyful feeling could only be captured live. I couldn’t help sometimes gazing around the arena, soaking up the energy. It was exhausting, sometimes difficult, but I can’t wait to do it again, if, again, the members of this club will help me get elected again. Notes from the DNC 2024 in Chicago by Chris Pearson
The underlying current from the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago 2024 is “Do Something!” to quote Vice President Kamala Harris and former 1st Lady Michelle Obama. If you think of something to help elect Harris as President, please do it. Don’t wait. Act. We all have networks and resources; between now and election day, use them. This will be a close election. Every little thing we all do will matter and make a difference. “Do Something!” If you can donate there are a number of options: https://kamalaharris.com https://cadem.org https://www.focus4democracy.org California (CA) has the largest delegation at the DNC. The parade of speakers during the DNC stopped by every morning at the CA Delegation Breakfast. They all had the same message: “knock on doors.” We can’t win campaigns by depending on social media. Voter contact matters and the best is still knocking on doors. All of the speakers, including Hakeem Jeffries, talked about winning back the House. The Cook Political Report lists 22 Congressional races tossups: https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/house-race-ratings 5 of those races are in CA where Dems are running against GOPers or Open: CA-13 Adam Gray. https://www.adamgrayforcongress.com CA-22 Rudy Salas. https://rudysalas.com CA-27 George Whitesides. https://www.georgewhitesides.com CA-41 Will Rollins. https://willrollinsforcongress.com CA-47 Dave Min. https://davemin.com (Katie Porter’s Open Seat) There are plenty of stories and behind the scenes, funny moments at the DNC 2024 in Chicago. Join us September 4, 2024 at the La Mesa Community Center at 6:30pm to share them at the monthly LMFDC meeting. We’ll be dishin’! Chris Pearson, PD, LMFDC
