Throughout the recently concluded World Cup, I was constantly struck by the observations I read online by foreign travelers to the United States. Remarks about the large “football” stadiums, the high temperatures, the phenomenal barbeque with huge portions, the massive gas stations (Buc-ee’s!), the friendliness of our citizens, and unfortunately, the utter lack of trains outside the northeast corridor. While I would consider myself a huge sports fan, like many Americans, I am only a soccer fan in passing. My far bigger passion is international travel. Alas, rather than join the international crowd traversing the United States in June to watch soccer, my three daughters (aged 10, 15, and 18), wife Kelli, and I decided to go the opposite direction and visit Europe for two weeks. For my two youngest daughters, it would be their first trip to Europe. Being lovers of beaches, great food, and warm weather, we decided to visit southern Italy and Greece. It did not disappoint. After a layover in Montreal on June 13, we started our adventure via a bus from the airport in Napoli to Sorrento, Italy. We took in phenomenal views of the Mediterranean on our way south to Sorrento, which is a historic city widely regarded as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Once we arrived, we were greeted by our AirBnb host, Pasquale, who was a quintessential Italian gentleman in his 70s who had lived in the region his whole life. Simply driving to Pasquale’s historic home above town was an experience in itself, as the cobblestoned road had “two-way traffic” yet was only slightly wider than his six-foot wide “shuttle,” and the road had plenty of blind curves.

Our only lifeline was the faint honk drivers would give when they approached a curve. For us it was a bit harrowing. For them, it was another day on the job. Throughout Pasquale’s property, were amazing lemon trees, as the region is known for having lemons the size of grapefruits. We spent four full days in Sorrento. Each one was a new adventure, and they all featured at least one visit to the gelateria and fantastic pasta and fish, including some of the best gnocchi we ever had. One day, we took a private boat tour to the nearby island of Capri. We went into several “grottos,” swam in the sea, and spent hours blown away by the island’s amazing rocky exterior. Two other days were spent on the Amalfi Coast, visiting the nearby villages of Positano and Amalfi. Of course, the drive to these towns south from Sorrento, on a city bus, was a huge part of the experience. With the mind-blowing, steep rocky drop into the sea, it is incredible to wonder how these communities and their structures had cropped up centuries earlier, and how these bus drivers so "calmly” traversed the narrow and windy roads. It rivaled any coastal drive in the United States we had been on. Truly spectacular. The towns themselves were both quite crowded, although it was still the early portion of the region’s busy summer season. Positano, in particular, was extremely picturesque, with steep stone steps down to the sea, gelato stands seemingly every 100 meters, and tons of boutiques and souvenir shops to entice their touristy visitors. The highlight of our time in southern Italy, though, may well have been our visit to the city of Pompei, during which we hired a local architect to lead a “kid-focused tour.” Before the city was wiped out by the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., Pompei was one of the world’s first modern civilizations to resemble our modern communities. As far back as 6thor 7thcentury B.C., the city had currency, a democratically elected city government, houses of worship, markets, schools, and relaxation spas. Because the ash from the volcano preserved the city, even 2,000 years after its destruction, you could still walk through people’s finely preserved homes and identify each of their rooms. To this day, the city remains an active architectural site with new discoveries occurring each year. After an unforgettable few days in Italy, we headed to Greece. After a layover in Athens, we landed on the island of Mykonos for what turned out to be a several hour wait as our ferry to the nearby island of Naxos was delayed due to high winds. After an hourlong ferry on the stunningly blue Aegean Sea, we arrived in Naxos shortly before sunset.
While Naxos receives a steady flow of visitors throughout the summer, part of its appeal is that it is not nearly as touristy as some of its more “famous” neighbors and rarely has a cruise ship port there for the day. Naxos is known for its phenomenal food and beaches and relaxed “locals” vibe. It did not disappoint. Some of the highlights of our Naxos adventures included an afternoon on the white sandy beach on the island’s remote southwest coast in a community called Agiassos; a sunset walk to the island’s famous iconic marble gateway, the Portara; an incredible cooking class during which our family made “Greek” salad using our instructor’s grandmother’s secret recipe; our Father’s Day visit to the island’s scenic mountainous interior including a stop in the community of Apeiranthos, which is known as the “marble village” and is famous for its stone paved valleys. And, of course, several incredible seafood dinners in Naxos’s lively Chora (Old Town) followed by late night World Cup viewing with my daughters. No trip to the Greek Islands is complete without at least a stopover in the majestic island of Santorini, which is located at the southern end of the Cycladic island group. While certainly crowded and touristy, Santorini did not disappoint. The town of Oia, located on the island’s northern tip, is known for its iconic white buildings with light blue roofs built on cliffs above the Aegean Sea and cave houses that had been blasted in the 18th and 19th centuries by impoverished sailors, farmers, and other workers. As I am training for a marathon, I particularly enjoyed the phenomenal (and quite hilly!) trail run opportunities on the island, including perhaps the most scenic run I had over done with iconic sea and cliffside views throughout. My daughters appreciated the unique opportunity to ride a donkey up the cliff from the sea, which is one of the highlights of any trip to Santorini! To cap off the trip, we decided to have a brief stopover in the Greek capital city of Athens before our flight back to Colorado. While we were exhausted by this point, and the temperatures hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit, we found Athens to be a wonderful city to simply walk through. We started our only full day in Athens with a visit to the Acropolis Museum with our youngest daughter and wrapped it up with a walk up the steep hill to visit the iconic Acropolis and Parthenon shortly before sunset. As we woke up our final morning at 4:00 a.m. to head to the airport, we were struck by the incredible vacation we had just experienced with our daughters. One we highly recommend to others—particularly with children—and one we will never forget!
