Earth Week
Spring Principal’s Message It’s wonderful to see the Spring activities beginning to take shape at school and around town as the days grow longer and the weather (slowly) warms up. March and April were busy months, filled with learning and events both in and out of the classroom, including our Talent Show, several field trips, and the transition into Spring sports. A major highlight this April was our school musical, Alice by the Heart, performed April 15–18 at the McKim Theatre. Our students delivered outstanding performances filled with talent, commitment, and heart. We are incredibly proud of them for the countless hours of rehearsal and dedication they poured into bringing this story to life. A heartfelt congratulations and thank you to Mr. Heyde, whose leadership and creativity guided the production from start to finish. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the many volunteers—staff, parents, and community members—whose time and support helped make the show such a success. It was truly a community effort, and it showed. As we look ahead, the final two months of the school year promise to be just as active as we prepare for our year‑end events. We encourage students to stay focused and finish the year strong. Support is available through Learning Services at lunch Monday to Thursday, lunchtime tutorials with teachers and peers, and after‑school peer tutoring in the Library Learning Commons on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concern. ~ Clint Dolgopol
Every student and staff member at Selkirk will benefit from being part of an open-minded and innovative learning community built upon the pillars of belonging, generosity, mastery and independence.

Careers 10 and Media Arts class had a presentation by Vancouver Film School. They offer programs in Film and television, animation and visual effects, gaming and creative design.
At Selkirk, we follow a progressive discipline policy and use the following themes in conveying our expectations to students.
When people watch Selkirks' musical productions they see only a glimpse of what goes on in Musical Theatre. This production has been such an incredible experience, and an amazing show and cast to leave Selkirk with. Before we even started work on the production there were auditions. During our practice, we all sang and performed monologs to each other, both building our confidence, as well as our comradery. To have a chance for any lead role you had to participate in callbacks, and a very small group got to this point. Despite the inherently competitive nature of callbacks, everyone was extremely supportive of each other. We all had the same scene to rehearse, and we all practiced together in the choir room over the days leading up to audition. After roles came out, everyone was extremely congratulative. Rehearsals were a ton of fun, seeing everyone slowly improve and seeing the show come together, especially when we started adding props and set pieces. Once we moved into the theatre it became much more real. With such an incredible set, it became much more natural to act, as well as a lot more fun.Over the run it was really easy to seek support from cast members and adults, which was very important in such a stressful time. We’ve learned a lot about persistent practice to achieve something great, and we are incredibly grateful for Mr. Heyde, and the opportunities he gives us. The P.A.R.T.Y. Program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk‑Related Trauma in Youth) is an injury‑awareness and prevention program that educates youth about the real‑life consequences of risk‑taking behaviours such as impaired driving, distracted driving, and substance use. Through firsthand experiences and presentations from emergency responders, healthcare professionals, and community partners, students learn how injuries occur—and how they can be prevented. Selkirk would like to sincerely thank the following individuals and organizations for bringing back the P.A.R.T.Y. Program:Dean Kletzel and the Kimberley RCMP; Shelley Hicks and Twyla Thomson, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS); Trevor Knight and the Kimberley Fire Department; Coralie Hockly; Scott MacLeod with Victim Services; Lisa Jackson, along with the doctors, nurses, and staff at East Kootenay Regional Hospital; Graham Knipfel and Teck; Cranbrook Towing; Alpine Toyota; and the Selkirk students who took the time to be part of the mock accident scene.
Storm Report
Spring is in full swing at Selkirk Secondary, with strong turnouts and enthusiastic participation across our athletic programs. Girls’ Soccer We have an amazing turnout this season, with a talented and dedicated group of players showing great potential. For the first time in many years, Selkirk is fielding both Junior and Senior girls’ soccer teams. The teams recently competed in the 18th Annual Kootenay Cup Challenge in Creston, where coaches were very proud of their effort, sportsmanship, and teamwork throughout the tournament. Our Junior team has performed exceptionally well, earning first-place finishes in both the Invermere and Creston tournaments. They are now preparing for the Zones Championship on May 6th, hosted at Selkirk Secondary School. Our Senior team also had a strong showing in Creston and is looking forward to competing in the Zones Championship on May 13th, which Selkirk Secondary will also host. Rugby The rugby team is fully engaged and demonstrating excellent teamwork. With each practice and tournament, the team continues to improve and build a strong foundation for success. Players are committed and practicing hard as they prepare for their next tournament in Nelson. Golf The golf team is “gripping and ripping” as they prepare for the upcoming Zones Championship in Creston on May 21st. The team is focused, motivated, and ready to compete at a high level in this important event. Track and Field Our track and field athletes are putting in a tremendous amount of effort as they prepare for the Kootenay Zone Track and Field Championships in Cranbrook on May 20th. We have a dedicated group of athletes who are learning new events and adapting their training routines to better prepare for competition.Mountain Biking Mountain biking is off to a great start this spring. We have a small but mighty team that is fearless on the trails. Athletes have been enjoying their Friday rides, and coaches have been impressed with their enthusiasm, determination, and perseverance—especially during those long uphill climbs.
We would like to congratulate Bryce Peebles as the Grad Class Valedictorian and Tiegann Bates and Jaxon Derosier, as the Grad Class Historians!

RMISP was excited to take seven Selkirk students on a Spring Break trip to Vancouver this year. The group had a great time exploring the city, with stops at the Totem Poles in Stanley Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, the UBC campus and Museum of Anthropology, Gastown, Granville Island, and downtown Vancouver. Some of the highlights included FlyOver Canada and cheering at an NHL game. Students also experienced a First Nations cultural program at Grouse Mountain, complete with a guided snowshoe hike and amazing ocean views. The trip wrapped up with some fun downtime, including escape games and golf, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone. In April, our international students had a great time trying out golf at the Cranbrook Mission Hills Golf Course, with many swinging a club for the very first time. It was a fun afternoon topped off with a shared dinner. At the same time, we were sad to say goodbye to Aliza, who wrapped up her six‑month stay in Kimberley to return home to Australia. We are thankful to Aliza for being such a wonderful part of our group, school, and community, and for all the contributions she made during her time here. She will be missed!
