Mid-Century Mountain Living 12 Spruce Avenue, Bragg Creek
"We believe that houses should be of their time and place. In this case the time is now and the place is Bragg Creek, Alberta"
The Place "Bragg Creek is a special place only 30 minutes west of downtown Calgary, where prairie gives way to foothills blanketed with sunny stands of trembling aspens in symbiosis with shady forests of white spruce and lodgepole pine. It is a hamlet at the crossroads of Highway 22 - the Cowboy Trail – and Highway 758 which passes Bragg Creek Provincial Park on its way to Highway 66, following the river valley to Elbow Falls and beyond to the front range of the Rockies, ending at Forget-me-not Pond with its multiple trailheads into the mountain wilderness. Or one can cross the Elbow River into West Bragg Creek, riding 10 KM to the West Bragg Creek Provincial Recreation Area, another gateway to Kananaskis Country, with its many hiking, biking and ski trails. Driving south along Highway 762 takes one through classic Alberta ranch country. Scenic beauty abounds. It is no mystery why many world renowned TV shows and movies are shot in and around Bragg Creek."
"It is also on the traditional land of the Tsuu T’ina and Stoney-Nakoda First Nations, and is bordered on the east by the current Tsuu T’ina First Nation Treaty 7 lands. The annual Tsuu T’ina Pow Wow and Rodeo takes place every July just 3 minutes up the road from the hamlet."
"These attributes give the hamlet itself a unique vibe that blends First Nations, Cowboy and Mountain culture. Here “buy local” is not a choice but an imperative, where small, independent businesses proffer local craft beer and spirits, fine and casual dining, live music, coffee, ice cream, baked goods, groceries, medications, clothing, hardware, art and local crafts. It is common for horses to be tied up outside the Powderhorn Saloon while cowboys and cowgirls whet their whistles alongside thirsty mountain bikers. Locals also benefit from access to medical, legal, accounting and veterinary services within the hamlet, and Banded Peak School (K-8) is just 3 minutes up the road. The Community Hall - is the focal point of an active community association, and is the place where a tennis match or outdoor hockey game can be played, or the kids can blow off steam at the playground."
The Site "12 Spruce Avenue is one block and a world away from the main street of the hamlet. The street is dead quiet but only a 5 minute walk from a great meal, cold beer, gourmet cup of coffee or some eggs and fresh vegetables. A 2 minute walk to the west will find you along the banks of the Elbow River where you can stroll along the river pathways, fish for trout or take a refreshing dip on a hot day. The site is 75’ x 250’ (0.44 acre) in a forest of White Spruce with a sprinkling of Aspens and a carpet of native grasses, juniper, bear berry, wild roses and strawberries. Trees afford the site with privacy on all sides. The building site has been re-seeded with a native grass mix in order to re-establish the native ground cover post construction."
The House "We designed the house to perfectly complement the site. It is completely custom and unique, and will always be so. In the modernist tradition, the interior spaces of the house are connected to the surrounding forest and meadow areas in a direct and nuanced way. The main living space, comprising the Living Room, Dining and Kitchen has generous windows on all 4 sides, and upon entry one can see through the home to the forest beyond. The full height windows afford visual connections that provide views from the ground plane, through the surrounding trees and up to the sky.Outdoor access is provided from the main living spaces on 3 sides, providing 3 different and complementary levels of enclosure and exposure."
"A courtyard formed by the garage and Mudroom/Laundry link is accessed from the living room by a 16’ wide bi-parting patio door. The courtyard provides a semi-enclosed outdoor room that is sheltered from prevailing north and west winds, acting as a sun-catch and making it pleasantly habitable in the shoulder seasons, and even on sunny Chinook days in the middle of winter. The space is suitable for individual repose as well as social gathering, perhaps around a fire, and is landscaped with a generous wraparound deck and three paper birch trees set in a ground plane of Montana Rainbow rocks sprinkled with larger stones sourced from the site."
"The covered porch is accessed directly from the south side of the glass living room wall. A clear roof provides shelter from rain and also tempers solar gain through the south facing glass of the living room without diminishing the generous amounts of daylight that enters the space. The Douglas Fir joists of the porch roof are a visual continuation of the exposed Douglas Fir roof joists of the Living Room, reinforcing the connection between indoors and out. The porch itself is conducive to neighbourly gathering, with its screened views of the front street, or possibly outdoor dining. It could quite easily be enclosed with screening or even greenhouse glazing, and is equipped with a natural gas connection for the potential addition of a heater. The north deck is accessed directly from the Kitchen, providing a shady and very private outdoor space surrounded by forest, and accessing a large back yard. A natural gas outlet provides a convenient connection for a barbecue and/or heater, providing the potential for construction of an outdoor kitchen along its east side."
"Inside, the main living area has a warm, slightly rustic “modern cabin” feel imparted by exposed Douglas Fir beams and wood ceilings that soar from 11’ at the front to 16’ in the living room, then drop to 9’ to form the ceiling of the Dining and Kitchen areas. Flooring is solid red oak, and all remaining wood in the interior is Douglas Fir. The rusticity of the exposed wood joists and ceilings is complemented by more finely dressed uses of fir that comprise all window frames, doors, cabinetry and the main stair. Cabinetry is made from vertical grain fir, and the lower cabinets of the kitchen and dining room buffet transition to form a window seat below a tall window, and long bench of low cabinets that extend through the living room to the front of the house. A gas fireplace mounted at midpoint, surrounded by textural porcelain tile extending to the ceiling and flanked by wood slatted wall sconces, provides a focus to the Living Room. Variegated green wall tiles form the kitchen and buffet backsplash, visually serving as a continuation of the colours and textures of the surrounding forest. Countertops are white quartz and hardware is brushed nickel."

Deep green tile helps tie it to the forest around, as do the generous windows – one up at the ceiling; one just above the rim of the tub, providing lovely views out to the forest while having a soak, the dense forest outside providing enough privacy that window coverings are unnecessary. Floors are porcelain tile and are heated."

"The slatted screen on the stairs is repeated behind the bench in the front hall, helping to tie the millwork together. This screen is similarly expressed through the vertical slats that partially enclose the covered porch, further reinforcing the visual connection between indoors and out."
Construction Features of 12 Spruce Avenue, Bragg Creek "The house is clad fibre-cement siding (HardiPlank) in a deep blue colour so that it sits quietly in the forest surroundings. The deep blue is complemented with clear coated batu trim – a sustainably harvested mahogany. Wood soffits are of the same fir as the ceilings to reinforce the indoor-outdoor connection. Windows are aluminum clad clear fir, finished in a warm grey colour and are triple-glazed. The roof is entirely insulated in polyurethane foam to a minimum R-value of 42, with minimal thermal bridging. A heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) provides energy efficient ventilation. Electrical service is 200 amps, with the main panel located in the garage. There is plenty of power to run an EV charging station. Roofing is hail resistant asphalt shingles – the most durable available – and the single south-facing slope of the main house will easily accommodate a large array of solar panels, with space in the mechanical room and capacity in the electrical panel to accommodate the necessary solar equipment."
