PRELUDE: Duane Prill, organ: Sonata No.1 in E-flat major, BWV 525 — Johann Sebastian Bach Asbury Orchestra, Laurie Kennedy, Director: “A New Light” — Tyler S. Grant YOUTH MUSICAL PREVIEW: "Seussical", performed Friday-Sunday, November 13-15 *CALL TO WORSHIP God gathers us from different histories into a life we share. We give thanks for those whose faithfulness has helped bring us here. Each generation receives the work of loving God and neighbor. We bring what we have learned and an openness to what God will teach us. The covenant calls for a response from all the people. Together, we offer our attention, our gifts, and our willingness to serve. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN: #140 “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” *WELCOME and PASSING THE PEACE *GATHERING HYMN: #399 “Take My Life, and Let It Be”, vv. 1, 2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION Faithful God, you have entrusted us with a life together, and we confess that we do not always tend it well. We so often leave to others the work that belongs to all of us. We hold so tightly to familiar ways that we struggle to recognize the gifts before us. When uncertainty unsettles us, we can become impatient with one another and slow to listen. Forgive us. Help us draw wisdom from our shared story without expecting the future to repeat it. Renew our trust in your presence, and teach us to take responsibility for the care and faithfulness of this community. We ask it in Jesus’ name. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE God’s mercy holds us through every change; in Christ, we are forgiven and given grace to renew our life together. We receive that grace with gratitude and offer one another room to begin again. *GLORIA (#102, “Now Thank We All Our God”, v. 3 alt.) All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. OUTREACH VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION SCRIPTURE: Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25 (New Revised Standard Version, Updated) Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. “Now, therefore, revere the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living, but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went and among all the peoples through whom we passed, and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” And the people said to Joshua, “No, we will serve the Lord!” Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” The people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. For the Word of God in Scripture. For the Word of God among us. For the Word of God within us. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM: Sanctuary Choir “Teach Me, O Lord” — Thomas Attwood (1765-1838) Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. (Psalm 119:33) CHILDREN'S TIME: Jo Urriola-Schonewolf, Coordinator for Age-Level Ministries Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN: #606 “Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine” SERMON CALL TO PRAYER: O Thou who hearest every heartfelt prayer, with Thy rich grace, Lord, all our hearts prepare; Thou art our life, Thou art our love and light, O let this Sabbath hour with Thee be bright! (Words: unknown; Tune: Morecambe, Frederick C. Atkinson, 1870) PASTORAL PRAYER INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP AND ENGAGEMENT: We are delighted you have joined us and ask that you sign and pass the ritual of friendship pad from the center aisle down the pew. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Faithful God, these gifts join the generosity of those who came before us and the hopes of those who will follow. Receive them for the work of this day. Give us wisdom to sustain what serves our neighbors well and imagination to recognize what now needs our care. Through our giving and our participation, strengthen this community for the work of love you place before us. Amen. *RECESSIONAL HYMN: #577 “God of Grace and God of Glory” *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE: Amen. (John Stainer) POSTLUDE: “Sonatina” from Cantata No. 106 — Johann Sebastian Bach

Join author Nico Lang for a critical conversation on how to be an ally to trans kids during a turbulent era. Saturday, November 21 at 3 pm in the Gathering Center. From the tip of Florida’s conservative panhandle to vibrant queer communities in California, and from Texas churches to mosques in Illinois, American Teenager gives readers a window into the lives of eight teens who, despite what some lawmakers might want us to believe, are truly just kids looking for a brighter future.

On Sunday, November 15, following 11 am worship and before the Seussical performance, we will gather for our annual Church Conference, which in the United Methodist Church is the once-a-year meeting where the entire congregation is invited to participate in the business of the church. Think of it as both a Town Hall and a family meeting: a time to celebrate what God has done among us, to affirm leaders for the coming year, and to take care of essential matters that shape our shared life. For those interested in the ongoing budget process, updates will be published in early November for your information and questions; the budget will not be finalized and passed until January. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for this special gathering—and make plans to attend the musical afterward!
Pledge cards are available in the pew pads at the end of each pew, as well as at the Welcome Desk in the Welcome Hall, or pledge online by visiting asburyfirst.org/pledge-online or by scanning the QR code.
Love God and Neighbor. Live Fully. Serve All. Repeat.
