*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. Come, seeking not to be served, but to serve, following the example of Christ. Ready us to walk in humility and compassion. In God’s realm, greatness is measured by love, and leadership by service. Make us eager to serve one another with open hearts. Lay aside your desires for recognition and honor; embrace the path of a servant. We trust in God's call to serve and love.

Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost
Prayer of Confession
Holy One, we confess that we often seek greatness in the wrong ways. We desire recognition, status, and power, forgetting that Jesus calls us to another way. Forgive us for our pride, for the ways we so often overlook others in need, and for seeking our own comfort above the good of your children. Help us to follow Christ's example of humility and service, laying aside our selfish ambitions in order to live fully in you. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
Christ came not to be served, but to serve, and calls us to do the same. Through Christ, we are set free to love and serve as he did. Thanks be to God.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Promises and Baptism
Congregational Response
Siblings of the household of faith, members of the body of Christ, we commend to your love and care Aliana, Sadie, and Elodie, whom we this day recognize as members of the family of God. What promise will you make to these families? With God's help we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that these children, surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the ways that lead to life eternal.
Hymnal #611, v. 1
Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit's sign; with this water God has sealed you unto love and grace divine.
Scripture Mark 10:35-44 New Revised Standard Version, Updated
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Appoint us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to appoint, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.
Anthem Wesley Singers, Holly Temming, Director
“Shine, Jesus, Shine” — Graham Kendrick Lord, the light of your love is shining In the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us, Set us free by the truth you now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me. (Refrain) Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory, Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire; Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; Send forth your word, Lord, and let there be light. Lord, I come to your awesome presence From the shadows into your radiance; By the blood I may enter your brightness, Search me, try me, consume all my darkness. Shine on me, shine on me. (Refrain) As we gaze on your kingly brightness, So our faces display your likeness; Ever changing from glory to glory, Mirrored here may our lives tell your story. Shine on me, shine on me. (Refrain)

Presentation of Bibles
Children receiving Bibles:
Pastor: Receive the Holy Scriptures and study their words. These stories belong to us all, and these words speak to us all. They tell us who we are. They tell us that we belong to one another, for we are the people of God, seeking truth together. Children: We receive these Bibles with our hands, our hearts, and our minds. Congregation: We rejoice in this step in your journey with God. We pray God will guide you, your family, and us as we use our Bibles in our homes, the Church, and throughout our lives. We commit to love, live, and serve together as we seek God’s truth.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Celebrations and concerns
YOU!
Stewardship Season is here, and we're excited to join together in supporting the ministries of Asbury First UMC! This month is our opportunity to pool our resources to make a lasting impact in our church and community. You should receive a letter in the coming week or so, and you will also find pledge commitment cards in the friendship pads in each pew. November 1 is the date to offer our gifts and pledges and dedicate them to God’s purposes. Let's give joyfully, knowing that together, we can do more for God's mission than we ever could alone!
