21st Sunday after Pentecost BIBLE SUNDAY
PRELUDE: David Strong, organ: “Processional” — Matthew Corl Asbury Ringers, Elizabeth Church, Director: “Fantasia on Beloved Hymns” — arr. Douglas E. Wagner “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” — arr. Kevin McChesney INTROIT: Hallelujah Kids and Wesley Singers & Ringers, Holly Temming, Director "The B-I-B-L-E" *CALL TO WORSHIP Moses asked God, “How will I know that you will go with us?” We bring our own questions, hoping to recognize God’s presence in the lives we are living. God promised to accompany a people whose journey was still uncertain. We gather to renew our trust in that promise and to listen for the next faithful step. Here we make room for the goodness of God to pass among us. May worship open our eyes to that goodness and shape the way we care for one another. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN: #116 "The God of Abraham Praise" *WELCOME and PASSING THE PEACE *GATHERING HYMN: #191 "Jesus Loves Me, This I Know", vv. 1, 3 PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of mercy, we want to know where you are leading before we agree to follow. We want your presence to confirm what we already believe, and we can miss the goodness that unsettles our assumptions. Forgive us when our need to be certain makes us unwilling to listen, or when our concern for our own future leaves little room for our neighbors. You know us by name and continue to make a place for us. Help us receive that grace with humility and extend it with generosity. Give us courage to take the next faithful step, trusting that you will go with us. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE God’s loving care reaches us wherever we are; we are forgiven, known by name, and accompanied on the road ahead. We receive this grace with gratitude and begin again, trusting God to go with us. *GLORIA (#102, “Now Thank We All Our God”, v. 3 alt.) All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. SCRIPTURE: Exodus 33:12-23 (New Revised Standard Version, Updated) Moses said to the Lord, “See, you have said to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ Now if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider, too, that this nation is your people.” He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to him, “If your presence will not go, do not bring us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.” The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have asked, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord,’ and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one shall see me and live.” And the Lord continued, “See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.” For the Word of God in Scripture. For the Word of God among us. For the Word of God within us. Thanks be to God. Wednesday Morning Book Study: The Bible, A Biography
Celebrations and concerns
Think you know the Bible? Think again! Join our six-week journey through Karen Armstrong's acclaimed book to explore how this text was written, fought over, and reinvented across thousands of years, from ancient exiles to the printing press and modern science. No background is required, just an open mind and a love for discussion. Wednesdays, 10 to 11:30 am, through November 18, in the Red Room (1010) and Zoom*.
Governing Board Meeting Rescheduled for October 19 Previously scheduled for October 12, the latest Governing Board meeting has been rescheduled for October 19, 5:30 pm in the Red Room. The Governing Board, in conversation with the congregation, sets the church’s policy and direction, handles its fiduciary and Disciplinary responsibilities, and empowers ministry teams to carry out the work of the congregation. If you would like to place flowers on the altars, please contact Jeanne Ristau at (585) 223-4356, preferably two weeks ahead of requested date. PRAYERS AND CONCERNS Our prayers are with the family of Beverly Sperring who died on July 3. She was the sister of Barbara Zerkel. Our prayers are with Cara and Chuck Hanranhan following the death of Cara's mother, Sharon Grigsby who died on October 13. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Sharon Selke who died on October 11. As we give thanks for their lives, we hold their families and friends in our prayers and in the loving embrace of this congregation. May God's grace sustain them, and may cherished memories bring comfort in their sorrow. We want to be able to visit and pray with those who are in the hospital. If you know someone who is in the hospital and would like a pastoral call, or if you yourself are in the hospital or have a date for surgery, please call Rev. Dee Finch who will be most glad to be with you in that moment. (585) 271-1050 x106.

Have you ever wondered what goes on in that booth, up behind the balcony, every Sunday morning? Here's your opportunity to check it out, and to see the equipment and meet some of the people who make our live stream happen week after week. The Production Suite Team is made up of adults and youth, and we are currently in need of additional operators - once trained, operators can sign up for shifts roughly once a month. If this ministry interests you, please come visit the Production Suite immediately after worship on Sunday, November 1 in the Narthex. Questions? Email Carl Johengen at cjohengen@asburyfirst.org.
Earlier this month was Banned Books Week, and this year's American Library Association theme is "Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read." Explore banned titles in our library, including Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates (nonfiction), The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (fiction), Sold by Patricia McCormick (teen), Melissa by Alex Gino (elementary), and This Day in June by Gayle E. Pitman (picture book). Search "banned book" in the library database or visit the Reading Room displays for more. While you're here, add a piece to our jigsaw puzzle and see this month's Welcome Center bulletin board by the Library Team!

Asbury First's Sunday School Forum meets weekly on Sundays in Fellowship Hall between services to discuss a range of topics including current events, social justice, and discipleship practices. Pastor Dee and Jo will be coordinating and facilitating this group. For more information, please contact programs@asburyfirst.org.
October Chapel Challenge: Winter Hats, Gloves, Coats and Handwarmers Each month we collect different supplies needed for the ministries of the Community Outreach Center. Please drop them off near the rail in the front of the Children's Chapel before or after services. Thank you for caring for our neighbors!

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of Johnny Colón, our Director of Property Care. Johnny has accepted a similar property management position elsewhere, and his last day with Asbury First will be November 1, 2026. Johnny’s service over the past couple of years has been quiet but consistent, and so much of what he does goes unnoticed because he does it so well. If you’d like to thank him, please write a note or drop off a card in the box in the Gathering Center, where notecards are also available.

As we enter this season, we hope you will take some time for prayer and reflection, giving thanks for the ways this community has touched your life and considering how you might participate in its ministry in the year ahead. There is no need to rush. We simply invite you to begin the conversation with God and to approach this season with an open heart. Pledge cards are available in the pew pads at the end of each pew, as well as at the Welcome Desk in the Welcome Hall.
