PRELUDE: David Strong, organ “Chorale in E” — Gordon Young; “Canzona” — Gordon Young INTROIT: O Sun beyond all suns; O Soul within all souls: grant me the grace of the dawn’s glory; grant me the strength of the Sun’s rays; that I may be well in my own soul, and be part of the world’s healing this day. (Words: John Philip Newel; Music: Carl Johengen) *CALL TO WORSHIP When the noise of the world grows loud and the path seems long, we are tempted to look for gods of our own making. Forgive us, Lord, when we put our trust in silver, gold, or the works of our own hands. Remind us of your covenant, O God. Turn our hearts away from wandering and back to your presence. With humble and grateful hearts, we bow before the one true God. Let us worship! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN: #126 "Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above" *WELCOME *GATHERING HYMN: #140 "Great Is Thy Faithfulness", v. 1 PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving God, when we grow impatient or uncertain of your presence, we turn our backs on your ways. We confess that we often trade your glory for empty idols. We seek security in things that cannot save us, shaping our lives around our own desires, and forgetting the hand that brought us out of bondage. Like Moses, we cry out to you to remember your mercy. Forgive our stubborn hearts. Help us to remember your steadfast love and covenant promises. Be with us when our eyes become fixed on priorities of our own making, and we fail to look for Jesus in the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and the imprisoned. Forgive us when we praise you with our lips, yet fail to reach out to others with acts of loving, caring, justice and mercy. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. God hears our cry, relents from destruction, and restores us in grace. Thanks be to God. Amen. *GLORIA (#102, “Now Thank We All Our God”, v. 3 alt.) All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. For the Word of God in Scripture. For the Word of God among us. For the Word of God within us. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM: Solo Quartet “When God Restored Our Common Life” — American hymn tune, arr. Roger Price; words by Ruth Duck (1992) When God restored our common life, our hope, our liberty, at first it seemed a passing dream, a waking fantasy. A shock of joy swept over us, for we had wept so long; the seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song. We went forth weeping, sowing seeds in hard, unyielding soil; with laughing hearts we carry home the fruit of all our toil. We praise the One who gave the growth, with voices full and strong. The seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song. Great liberating God, we pray for all who are oppressed. May those who long for what is right with justice now be blest. We pray for those who mourn this day, and all who suffer wrong; may seeds they water now with tears spring up into a song. CHILDREN'S TIME: Jo Urriola-Schonewolf, Coordinator for Age-Level Ministries Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN: #443 "O God, Who Shaped Creation" SERMON CALL TO PRAYER: Dear Savior, help our unbelief, and may our faith abound to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found. (Words: Henry Alford, alt.; Music: F.J. Haydn, adapted from Psalm 61, arr. Carl Johengen) PASTORAL PRAYER INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP AND ENGAGEMENT: We are delighted you have joined us and ask that you sign and pass the ritual of friendship pad from the center aisle down the pew. STEWARDSHIP MOMENT: Faithfully Together — Peter and Mary Knappen Offering Ourselves to God's Purposes: We invite you to prayerfully consider making a gift to support the everyday ministries and operations of this church, allowing us to live into our vision to Do More Good. OFFERTORY: Sanctuary Choir “God Be In My Head” — Andrew Carter; words from the Sarum Primer, 1514 God be in my head, and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes, and in my looking. God be in my mouth, and in my speaking. God be in my heart, and in my thinking. God be at mine end, and at my departing. *DOXOLOGY: (Hymnal #95) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *PRAYER OF DEDICATION Gracious God, we bring these gifts, signs of love learned from you. Quiet our anxious hearts, and shape us into a people whose offerings show that we are on the side of our neighbors. Receive what we place in your hands and let it become courage, welcome, and hope. Amen. *RECESSIONAL HYMN: #428 "For the Healing of the Nations" *BENEDICTION *BENEDICTION RESPONSE: Amen. (Gerald Peterson) POSTLUDE: “Chant Héroique” — Gordon Young
SCRIPTURE: Exodus 32:1-14 (New Revised Standard Version, Updated) When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me.” So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took these from them, formed them in a mold, and cast an image of a calf, and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it, and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a festival to the Lord.” They rose early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought sacrifices of well-being, and the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to revel. The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’ ” The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, and of you I will make a great nation.” But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.

PRAYERS AND CONCERNS Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Beverly Sperring who died on July 3. She was the sister of Barbara Zerkel. As we give thanks for their life, we hold their families and friends in our prayers and in the loving embrace of this congregation. May God's grace sustain them, and may cherished memories bring comfort in their sorrow. We want to be able to visit and pray with those who are in the hospital. If you know someone who is in the hospital and would like a pastoral call, or if you yourself are in the hospital or have a date for surgery, please call Rev. Dee Finch who will be most glad to be with you in that moment. (585) 271-1050 x106.
Bibles Ministry at Asbury First A new initiative has taken shape at Asbury First: the Bibles Ministry seeks to collect extra Bibles from the congregation and redistribute them to those who could use one. Bring your extra Bibles to one of two receptacles on campus (one in the Welcome Hall near the other donation bins, and the other in the Church Offices at 1050), and they'll be distributed to homeless centers, schools, youth programs, re-entry programs, battered women's centers, and outreach centers around Monroe County.

Join us October 14 for a presentation by the Generosity Team. Jacob Barragato, CFP®, a Financial Advisor with 7Crest Financial Partners, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC. Jake will provide an educational overview of several key issues, including Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), and the impact of taxable income on Medicare IRMAA surcharges. These are areas that many find confusing or complex, but they can have a significant impact on both the giving and the giver. Sponsored by the Generosity Team.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in that booth, up behind the balcony, every Sunday morning? Here's your opportunity to check it out, and to see the equipment and meet some of the people who make our live stream happen week after week. The Production Suite Team is made up of adults and youth, and we are currently in need of additional operators - once trained, operators can sign up for shifts roughly once a month. If this ministry interests you, please come visit the Production Suite immediately after worship on Sunday, November 1. We'll meet in the Narthex and head up together. For more information, contact Carl Johengen, cjohengen@asburyfirst.org.
Next Sunday, October 18 is Bible Sunday; at the 11 am Service, our third-graders will receive personalized Bibles as a gift to mark their growth here at Asbury First. If you received a Bible here as a child, please bring it with you next week to celebrate! And look for more history on this tradition in tomorrow’s Monday Reader.
