Prelude
Partita on “Praise, My Soul the King of Heaven” — Robert Hobby
Introit
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light, Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o'er the shades of night; Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. (Words: Charles Wesley; Tune: Ratisbon, J. G. Werner's Choralbuch, 1815)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. Sing God’s praises! Make a joyful noise to the Lord. We have walked through fire and water with heavy burdens on our shoulders. But God has led us into a spacious place, where we can plant gardens of faith. Rejoice in the Lord! Let us build houses of joy, and shout glory to our God! Let us worship in gratitude and praise. Alleluia!

Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
The community gathers As the community gathers, may the music of the prelude draw your hearts and minds to God.
Prayer of Confession
O God, so often we take you and your precious love for granted. We assume you will answer our prayers, heal us, and make us whole. Forgive us for not appreciating your grace and presence in our lives. Stir up gratitude within us. Give us faith to see you in everything and everyone around us. May thanksgiving be always in our minds and on our lips.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
This is the good news that comes from God: God hears our prayers, covers us with grace, and transforms us into a thankful people. Thanks be to God. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3, alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Congregational Response
Members of the household of faith, I commend to your love and care this child, whom we this day recognize as a member of the family of God. Will you endeavor so to live that she may grow in the knowledge and love of God, through our Savior Jesus Christ? With God’s help we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that this child, surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

#377 "It Is Well with My Soul", vv. 1, 2
Scripture Luke 17:11-19
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten men with a skin disease approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’s feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? So where are the other nine? Did none of them return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”
Anthem Sipra Agrawal Kolar, Soprano
“We Cannot Measure How You Heal” — Scottish trad. tune, arr. Claire Liddell; words by John Bell We cannot measure how you heal or answer every sufferer’s prayer, yet we believe your grace responds where faith and doubt unite to care. Your hands, though bloodied on the cross, survive to hold and heal and warn, to carry all through death to life and cradle children yet unborn. The pain that will not go away, the guilt that clings from things long past, the fear of what the future holds, are present as if meant to last. But present too is love which tends the hurt we never hoped to find, the private agonies inside, the memories that haunt the mind. So some have come who need your help and some have come to make amends, as hands which shaped and saved the world are present in the touch of friends. Lord, let your Spirit meet us here to mend the body, mind and soul, to disentangle peace from pain and make your broken people whole.

ALTAR FLOWERS The flowers on the altars are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dr. William D. Miller, Bob’s brother, by Dr. Robert Lee Miller and Dr. Timothy Johnson; in loving memory of Gene Simmons by his daughter Tammy Clifford; and in loving memory of Kathy Welch by Norm and Jesse Welch. Have you noticed the lone sunflower on the altar? The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. In solidarity with Ukraine, we will have a single sunflower on the high altar until the war ends. Want to help? You can support the United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR) Ukraine special advance online at asburyfirst.org/give. Please note "Ukraine", or mail a check to the church office at 1050 East Ave. We will collect these special donations and send them on to UMCOR. If you would like to place flowers on the altar, please contact Jeanne Ristau at 585-223-4356, preferably two weeks ahead of requested date. Prayers and Concerns We offer our prayers and concerns for all those who are ill at home, hospitalized, or in hospice care, and for all those affected and infected by the global pandemic. We offer our prayers and concerns to friends and family of Dr. Robert Miller, husband of the Rev. Dr. Timothy James Johnson, who passed away on September 17. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary today at 2 pm.

Meetings & Rehearsals october 9-15
Our values represent a description of our guiding principles. These statements are standards of behavior, which are inherent in all we do.
Open to All We believe we are all equal in God’s eyes and are all one in Christ. We extend hospitality and encourage full participation for all regardless of any perceived defining characteristic. Worship We believe we are at our best when we connect to God together through preaching, prayer, and song. We strive for excellence in all we do, especially in our worship experience. Community We believe we are better together; fellowship and care are keys to love and life. Outreach We believe everyone deserves hope and fullness of life. We endeavor to practice mercy and work for justice in our local and extended community. Discipleship We believe we—adults, youth, and children alike—are called to grow in our faith both as a community and as individuals through education, regular worship, meaningful fellowship, a commitment to service, and celebrating rites of passage together. Generosity We believe what we have is a gift from God. We share our gifts with an open heart to help meet needs at Asbury First, the Rochester community, and throughout the world. Stewardship We believe we must care for the human, physical, and financial resources with which we have been entrusted.
If you would like to help support those in the path of the tropical storm Ian, we encourage you to give to the United Methodist Committee of Relief (UMCOR) by using the following link: advance.umcmission.org/p-620-umcor-us-disaster-response-and-recovery.aspx. You can give online at asburyfirst.org/give, and note "Hurricane". Or, you can mail a check to the church office at 1050 East Ave. We will collect these special donations and send them on to UMCOR. UMCOR responds to natural or civil disasters of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community’s ability to recover on its own. Through UMCOR, United Methodists extend loving care to people within the United States. When disaster strikes, it is local churches that provide the first response to their communities.
