Frederick the original Grandmaster is a sociopath who know no bounds. He believes other people exist merely to act as his pawns. He does nothing unless it will benefit him in some way. He is a truly powerful and terrifying individual who thinks nothing of taking human life to further his own ends. Frederick was the creator of the secret Society of the Eye and built his evil powers on those dark practitioners that came before him. He travels through the ages powered by demonic forces paid for in human souls and misery. He is the darkest of his line and yet was limited in his actions by Edith. The family line clearly has demonic flaws and God help us all if they ever work together in some sort of satanic pact and are allowed to roam unchecked!
3
Dena is a psychic medium who comes from a long line of similarly blessed women. She has taught herself, with the help of her mother and grandmother, to exist on the astral plane and to be able to project herself back in time and interact to counter demonic forces. She can sense the presence of spirits and work to counter their actions. She only works on genuine cases and shuns publicity and charlatans. She has her own team that go ahead of her to check out the reported paranormal activity to see if it is genuine or not. She doesn’t make a charge for her services as she is financially independent. As you might expect she is a strong character and a force for good in an otherwise dark world. She has battled demonic forces as well as helping ghostly spirits to pass over to the other side peacefully. She does need help when dealing with pure evil entities such as Frederick as at times she can be vulnerable and so has to rely on others occasionally to keep her safe.
4
Edith is the sweet looking old lady who everyone wants as their grandma but this grandma is one to be avoided at all costs! Unknown to everyone she was the one telling Frederick which items to buy and place in Warehouse 12 to create huge profits. He thought he was the one in charge after all, he is the Grand Master and he was doing his best to bully and intimidate her so that she would follow his instructions. Little did he know she had decided to do her own research and with the help of some of the oldest and most power majick books, was able to turn the table on him and limit his movement in the modern world. Without her Frederick could have been a threat to anyone he came upon no matter what time they were in. They are both related and in reality they are both sociopaths and willing to use anyone to get what they want. Edith particularly made sure that the inheritance line hadn’t come to an end despite what most people thought. She was conspiring with her successor to make sure the family line carried on and made sure that she was still around to keep an eye on the estate and family reputation – that was her big consideration – putting a respectable face on horrific behaviour.
The Workhouse gates and fence are made from wrought iron and are painted black and are the first part of the Workhouse anyone sees. They are not just there to keep people out they are there to keep people in must most of all to be imposing. To give the message that once you enter that gate you are highly likely never to come out. They send the message that this is not a place you want to be.
5
It looks more like a prison than a social safety net and that is deliberate. Nobody would volunteer to enter this place. It is the very last resort and some would sooner die than enter it. As Charles Dickens character Ebenezer Scrooge would say, “Then they should die and decrease the surplus population.” Such is the feeling among the well off that the wretched had brought their fate on themselves. The Workhouse is no free ride. Inmates worked on often menial tasks that would bring in an income to pay towards their food, clothing and lodgings. The hours were long and the work hard and the pay was never enough to cover their charges so they could never work themselves free. Windows were high up so inmates wouldn’t be distracted by looking outside. It was a harsh regime and the only relief was death.
The Workhouse building was built in an imposing style that intimidates possible future and present inmates.

Oak Castle is the base for Sir Alfred who is the leader of the Dark Knights. It is built on top of solid rock and is virtually impregnable from outside attack. When Sir Alfred is absent it only needs a handful of men to protect it from being overwhelmed. It commands a 360-degree view of the land for miles around. No one can sneak up on this fortress.
On his tunic Sir Alfred is proud to wear the Cross of the Dark Knights. As leader of a religious order, he is certain he has the Lord on his side and fights on the side of the righteous against all comers who might plunder for wealth or religious conquest.
Sir Alfred isn’t always in his armour and on his quest to save the northern village and friary under his protection he needs that book of majick to counter what is being hurled at him. His men follow him without question and are more than willing to die for him and his cause if that’s what is needed.
Sir Alfred on His Quest
The Offical Tunic and Crest of the Dark Knights
In his resplendent battle armour Sir Alfred is a force for good who commands a powerful and religious fighting group. They are the strongest and most powerful men in the country and there is only one thing that can stop them – majick!
Dark Knight Sir Alfred
7
This red eyed fiend is the size of a Wolf and has vicious teeth that can rip through bare flesh with ease. They aren’t always visible but can always be heard and their growl will instil fear, shock and horror into anyone who has the misfortune to come across one. They are often found as a pack which makes them even more deadly. They rip and tear their victims in the blink of an eye. There is nothing human that can stop them. They’re summoned by powerful majick and the only thing that can counteract them is equally powerful majick including runes to disguise the identity of their target and put them off the scent. Unless they can be returned to hell they will be relentless in their pursuit of the individuals they have been sent to destroy.
9
The Leviathan is one of the most power entities that comes straight from Hell to attack the enemies of the person manifesting them. Normal weapons have no effect and the Leviathan can literally rip a person into pieces. They are huge and are sure to fill any ordinary person with fear and dread for their very soul. The only way to combat the Leviathan is with even more powerful majick which can return them to where they came from, bind them temporarily or blind them but not destroy them. They can be summoned when a hex is triggered or when their master is close by and both will command them to attack. They can’t be reasoned with and need extremely dark majick to bring them into being. They aren’t alive, they exist and are part of the demonic forces from the deepest and darkest underworld.
This demonic entity is grotesque in its physical form and can swallow a fully grown man in one gulp. Anything it swallows enters a cage of fleshless ribs the sight of which terrifies any witness. Its beak is razor sharp and has strength not of this world. It’s eye sockets have no eyes yet it sees perfectly and has a huge wingspan. Its claws can disembowel a man in one swipe. Its call is deafening and a high pitched shrill. The beat of its wings makes a loud, dull and sickening sound that strikes fear into anyone close. Standard weapons will have no effect on this horror and normal people would be instantly doomed to death. The only thing that can banish these barbaric entities is the darkest of majick in the same way it can manifest them. Only the strongest and most evil beings can cause one of these to rise from the pit of Hell.

Nurse
Nun
The nun should be there to comfort the children sometimes when they are going to die and there is nothing medically to be done. Yet she was working with her twin and preparing them to have their souls given over to Frederick and to be damned in an eternal hell.
This nurse is at the Workhouse and was employed by Frederick to take care of the children in the infirmary so that it would look like they were being well cared for. In reality she is a evil twin to the nun and both are sadists who thrive on having power over the youngsters in their care. She would make it look like she was fighting for their health but instead was making sure that a high number never recovered once they were in her grip.
He would work as a pickpocket and steel food and sleep wherever he could that was dry and relatively safe. Unfortunately for him he was caught and after a brief court appearance sentenced to deportation. That put him right in the hands of Frederick just like a lot of other people. He lost his life at the hands of the Grandmaster and has been doomed to roam the underground tunnels that link Frederick’s family buildings.
Luke
Peter
This ghost was older than Peter and although not strictly speaking an orphan, was in the same situation as he had run away from a physically abusive father who would beat him and his mother seemingly just because he could and when drink made him feel that way which was most days.
He wasn’t going into the workhouse he was old enough to fight for himself on the street and had fallen in with a bad crowd.
12
Despite Peter’s young years he has already lived a lifetime of other people’s woes and that can be seen in the look on his face. He is old beyond his years and more grown up than most boys twice his age. He has worked down a coal mine operating heavy wooden underground ventilation doors that can be deadly to all but the most careful and earned a pittance for his trouble. He was present during an underground cave-in which killed several miners blasting at the coal face.
He went to work as a chimney sweep’s assistant crawling up the inside of sooty filthy chimneys to clean away the dirt. This paid more than his previous job but was even worse for his health as he would breathe in a lot of the soot he was there to get rid of. So much so when he coughed soot came out of his lungs. On top of that Peter had to watch as his mum slowly died of consumption. Shortly after that him and his older siblings had little choice but to enter the dreaded workhouse. The last resort that some would truly rather die than enter. As Charles Dicken’s Scrooge put it, “Then they should get on with it and decrease the surplus population!” Peter then had to contend with the ill treatment from a nun and a nurse who were supposed to look after him. Some might say his death was a release from a very cruel life.
Saffron is May’s life partner and together they make a formidable force for good. She is a powerful white witch who tries to stay off the radar and lives in a large cabin surrounded by trees and nature. She has sworn to protect May with her life. Saffron is happy to join with other positive forces if she and May are convinced there is a need for it.
White witches are ones who use often ancient majick for positive outcomes. They are attuned to the natural earth and their practices have been around since the birth of time. They can detect evil forces and often counter their effects.
13
Saffron
May in turn is Saffron’s partner and has sworn with her life to protect her. She is every bit as powerful as her partner and is more than capable of fighting evil spirits but doesn’t go looking for trouble. She lives with her partner and collects, dries and prepares a huge range of natural ingredients for curing ailments but also to counter darker forces just in case they’re needed. Better to be prepared and never need it is the way May sees it.
May
The power of the necklace is second only to the set of evil keys. It is a representation of the full Plutonic table which amplifies power for the Grand Master and was forged with the rarest of metals and jewels. The shape contains perfect symmetry and is reinforced by the power of runes built into the outer ring. It is a priceless artefact that many would covert but few would know how to wield.

The evil keys were devised to unlock ultimate power to the bearers and were created to stop any one person wielding too much. They can all be used separately to reinforce the majick in runes and spells but if they all come together and are entered into the edge of the Plutonic table, the whole world as we know it is at risk as the table amplifies the power of anything placed into it.
The good keys were forged to counter the power of the evil ones. They can unlock and neutralise the evil powers wielded by the foulest of creatures and can be used to imprison practitioners of the darkest arts. They are one of the few things that can counter demons and can send abominations back to the pit from which they came.
