SCRAPBOOK | September 2025
ARTICLES | September 2025
The Staff Parish Relations Committee is pleased to be able to share significant progress made over the past year. In 2024, the hard-working Dream Team set out a new framework intended to “inspire meaningful action, encourage thoughtful discernment, and serve as a living document that shapes our ministries for years to come.” The Team wrote: “Dreams alone are not enough—they must be paired with action, commitment, and a shared purpose,” and invited Committees, ministry teams, and staff “to take the next step by developing measurable short- and long-term goals that align with our reaffirmed Values and Guiding Questions.” The Dream Team identified eight priorities, driven by the reaffirmed values and carried out through our various areas of ministry. Most of the priorities identified in the Dreams Report relate in part to the SPRC’s work. In particular, the SPRC’s most direct calls to action were (1) Developing a New Priority Focus on Youth, Children/Families, (2) Growing and Engaging the Congregation, and (3) Addressing Expectations and Dependence on Paid Staff. In the months following the Report the SPRC, in conjunction with the Senior Minister, undertook a fresh top-to-bottom look at our entire pastoral and lay staffing structure to rethink how it could best be aligned for progress in achieving the Dream priorities. In the background was an understanding, from work of the Finance Committee and Sustainability Task Force, that resources are limited. Additionally, rather than overlap planning work being done by the Community Outreach Center, the SPRC did not include COC staffing in its analysis. The SPRC developed a complete staff reconfiguration plan to better align people resources with the stated Dream priorities. The general outline of the reconfiguration plan was reviewed with the Governing Board in late Spring and the final detailed plan was formally approved by the Board in September. In connection with the reconfiguration, new positions were created, some positions were eliminated, and revised job descriptions were developed for most existing positions, all within budget parameters. Included among others are an expanded full-time Director of Children and Family Ministries, and reconfigured positions for Director of Nurture and Discipleship, Director of Operations, Operations Manager, and Director of Music Ministry. Job descriptions were approved by the SPRC in September. To keep focus on the future, the reconfiguration analysis was done without consideration of existing positions or the persons currently filling them. However, when we took the next step of comparing our current staff with the reconfigured structure, we were delighted to find that each current member of our staff fit well within the new framework, and each has been offered a position at least equivalent or better than the one they currently hold. We are truly blessed to have such a talented and hard-working staff. We are excited about the impact toward achievement of our Dreams that each of them will make in the newly aligned positions. Our work to achieve the Dream vision must continue. To be clear, the job descriptions for each member of our already hard-working staff require more than they can alone fulfill. They will need to prioritize, and their complete success is dependent, in part, on support from volunteers and teams. Each of us in the congregation must do everything in our power to help fill that gap.
MEET THE STAFF – JOHN ORMSBEE, DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
In this month's spotlight, we sit down with our Director of Finance to learn about his journey, his passion for Asbury First's mission, and his penchant for serendipity. Every morning, John Ormsbee walks into his office driven by something deeper than spreadsheets and budgets. In cahoots with his team of seven volunteer finance angels—Keane Dziduch, Rick Shevlin, Dave Kennedy, Barb Eltinge, Ellen Williams, Cristy Peck, and Patrick Fulford—the Finance Office quietly processes over 10,000 individual contributions each year alongside about 2,500 payments. They handle investment recording, reconcile statements, and manage fund transfers, saving Asbury First tens of thousands of dollars annually through their generous service. He's honored to work alongside the staff and volunteers at 1050 East Ave, loves crunching complex numbers and setting up the church for success in the future, but what fuels John Ormsbee's passion for managing finances in our faith community is refreshingly straightforward: he loves the mission of Asbury First. The path that led John to us was a meandering one. His career wound through retail banking, then financial planning, before he returned to school for his MBA and CPA designation. From there, he moved into business valuation and eventually shifted into non-profit accounting. Rather than following a carefully crafted plan, his journey was quite the opposite: a series of opportunities that ultimately brought him exactly where he belongs. Now thrilled to be at Asbury First, he hopes to remain for many more years to come. If you've met John, you know he has collected a lot of great stories along his way. As someone who often shares the lunch table with him at 1050, I can attest that John's presence at the table is always accompanied by conversation and laughter – a trait that often ensures that our workdays are sprinkled with the right amount of joy. Perhaps no story better captures his character than the tale of how he met the love of his life, Lis Bischoff-Ormsbee. John tells it best: "One day during my senior year in college I was enjoying a honey bun in the snack bar when a girl I had a crush on walked in. I tried to impress her by bragging that I loved honey buns so much that I could eat six of them. She smiled politely and left, leaving me with a few last bites of pastry to mend a broken heart and shattered dreams of love. But to my astonishment she reappeared with a bag of five more honey buns and dared me to eat them. Well, I ate ‘em up, and married that girl! Not many people can say the same, but the best decision I ever made, by far, was to eat six honey buns on a dare." Today, his life finds rhythm in the variety of his interests. Finance, music, cooking, and family each provide their own kind of diversity and diversion, a welcome change of pace that keeps life engaging. Music holds a special place in his current chapter. Lately, he's been investing considerable time coordinating rehearsals and managing the library for the Melody Masters Big Band. The joy, he explains, comes not just from the music itself, but from performing alongside his wife Lis and bringing the Great American Songbook to Rochester audiences. Beyond his role as trombonist, he's taken on the behind-the-scenes work of handling logistics for rehearsals and gigs, ensuring everything runs smoothly so the music can take center stage. John is a man of many talents, but perhaps his most important trait is a willingness to pivot, reassess, and try something new — maybe the most meaningful paths in life are discovered not by following a map, but by having the courage to say yes when opportunity knocks, even especially if it comes disguised as six honey buns.
MEET THE STAFF – DAVID STITH, Director of Communications
Every few weeks, we're pulling back the curtain to introduce you to the varied and interesting folks who've found their place at Asbury First as staff members, helping to execute the vision of our congregation. Meet David Stith, our Director of Communications, who manages everything from emails and social media to our website, newsletters, and printed materials. David comes to us from a fascinating career in the arts—first as a graphic designer and visual artist freelancing in the New York City and London music industries, then as a composer and touring musician. While he describes himself as deeply introverted, he finds that his communications work draws out parts of himself he often forgets are there. For the past year and a half at Asbury First, David has found new ways to connect with our community, creating original art for our weekly bulletin covers, launching the Monday Reader, and developing engaging social media content for our Facebook and Instagram communities. But David's creative life extends far beyond our church walls. Earlier this month, he was invited to perform on NYC's Little Island—an artificial island park in Manhattan—for a sold-out tribute concert to Arthur Russell, a beloved American songwriter who died during the AIDS crisis. David not only performed as a singer but also rearranged several of Russell's songs for the ten-piece band and guest vocalists Ella Hunt and Martha Wainwright. Remarkably, this complex performance came together with just a single 12-hour rehearsal. This kind of intensive collaboration isn't new for David, who has years of touring experience under his belt. Between 2010 and 2014, he performed for hundreds of thousands of people as both a solo artist (under the moniker DM Stith) and as part of Sufjan Stevens' live band, gracing stages from London's Royal Festival Hall to the Sydney Opera House, and even appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. For those who know David around church, this hidden talent often comes as a surprise—he prefers working behind the scenes and hardly presents himself as the rock star type. He moved to Rochester from NYC during the pandemic, leaving his position as a designer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in favor of a quieter domestic life. By day, he feels at home composing newsletters and bulletins for Asbury First, as long as his nights remain free for his ongoing creative endeavors in music and art. Want to connect with our vibrant online community? Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see David's latest creative work in action!

Have you ever wondered what the Bible really says—and if it truly has any meaning for us in modern times? If so, then you’re not alone. Most Christians have never really read the Bible, and many wonder if it’s antiquated teachings truly transcend time. If you would like to grapple with these questions, then you are encouraged to join in the Disciple Bible Study. Disciple IV spends the first half the year looking at the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament, and the second half of the year focused on the Gospel of John and Revelation. The Disciple IV Bible study will be starting later this spring. Please contact Mike Mullin for more information or to sign-up contact mmullin@asburyfirst.org

The knitting itself is very simple and we have “experts” on hand to help you if you are a beginner. The group meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday. Clergy and lay members of our church identify those who may benefit from our ministry and a shawl, and they're delivered by ministers or congregation members. Questions?
