Prelude
Prelude and Fugue in F Sharp Minor — Dietrich Buxtehude
Introit
Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us to walk in his ways. Let us walk in the light of the Lord! (Words: Isaiah 2:3, 5; Music: Carl Johengen)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. Come, let us follow the path of Christ, who calls us to humility and service. We come, eager to learn from the One who turns the world’s values right side up. In a world that seeks power and prestige, Jesus shows us the way of self-giving love. We come, ready to embrace the call to serve others as Jesus served us. Let us open our hearts to welcome all persons as we would welcome Christ. We come to worship the One who invites us to greatness through service.

Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, how often have we sought greatness in the wrong places? We desire to be first, to be recognized and admired, yet we neglect the call to serve others in humility. We find it hard to understand your truth, that the greatest are those who serve the least. Forgive us for our pride and our desire for status. Teach us to embrace the way of Jesus, to welcome others as we would welcome you, and to serve with our whole hearts. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
In Christ, we are welcomed as God’s beloved children, forgiven and restored. Thanks be to God, who lifts us up in love and grace. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
Scripture Mark 9:30-37 Common English Bible
From there Jesus and his followers went through Galilee, but he didn’t want anyone to know it. This was because he was teaching his disciples, “The Human One will be delivered into human hands. They will kill him. Three days after he is killed he will rise up.” But they didn’t understand this kind of talk, and they were afraid to ask him. They entered Capernaum. When they had come into a house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about during the journey?” They didn’t respond, since on the way they had been debating with each other about who was the greatest. He sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be least of all and the servant of all.” Jesus reached for a little child, placed him among the Twelve, and embraced him. Then he said, “Whoever welcomes one of these children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me isn’t actually welcoming me but rather the one who sent me.” The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.

Anthem Gwen Paker, Soloist
“Simple Gifts” — American folk song, arr. Aaron Copland ‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free. ‘Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be. And when you find yourself in the place just right, ‘twill be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, to bow and to bend we shan't be afraid. To turn, turn will be our delight, till by turning, turning we come round right. ‘Tis the gift to be simple…

Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Prayer
We come, believing, your words receiving. Lord, show us what you’d have us do. Teach us how to live; spur our hearts to give. You know our yearning, our spirits turning. Lord, hear us when we turn to you. (Words and Music: Ashley Danyew)

*Doxology Hymnal #95
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Prayer of Dedication
Loving God, as we bring these gifts to You, we remember the example of Jesus, who came not to be served, but to serve. We dedicate our gifts and our lives to your service, praying that you would use them and us to show the world what is true and right. In Christ’s name, we offer ourselves to you. Amen.

“The Servant Song” — David Schwoebel, incorporating the American hymn tune Beach Spring; words by Richard Gillard, and Mark 9:35 If anyone would be first, they shall be the last of all; they shall be the last; be the servant of all. We are travelers on a journey, fellow pilgrims on the road; We are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. Sister, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too. Brother, let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too. If anyone would be first... I will weep when you are weeping, when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you; I will share your joy and sorrow, till we’ve seen this journey through. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, Born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony. If anyone would be first, they shall be the last of all; they shall be the last; be the servant of all.
