Prelude
"Prélude in C Minor" — Théodore Dubois "Cantilène religieuse" — Dubois
Introit
Glory to God! Our living songs we raise with all your folk of every time and place; with saints both old and new we lift our praise to fill with swelling sound this holy space. (Words: Leith Fisher, 1941-2009; Tune: The bleacher lass o’ Kelvinhaugh, Scottish folk tune)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. Who do you say that Jesus is? We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. He calls us to deny ourselves and follow him. We come, ready to follow. Jesus asks a lot of those who follow, but promises abundant life. We come, seeking the life that is truly life.
*Processional Hymn
#444 “O Young and Fearless Prophet”
*Greeting and Passing the Peace
*Gathering Hymn
#553 "And Are We Yet Alive", vv. 1, 2, 6
Prayer of Confession
Holy One, we confess that we often shy away from the cost of following the way of Christ. We seek comfort and ease, preferring our own desires over your call to self-denial and sacrifice. Forgive us when we are ashamed of you and your words, when we hesitate to speak of you. Help us boldly to confess your name and profess our faith. Help us to follow you faithfully, trusting in your promise of life. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
If we give up our old lives for the sake of Christ, we will find more than we could ever ask or imagine. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and given new life. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
Minute for Mission
Help Me Read — John Smalt
Scripture Mark 8:27-38 Common English Bible
Jesus and his disciples went into the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They told him, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.” He asked them, “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: “The Human One must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, after three days, rise from the dead.” He said this plainly. But Peter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him. Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, then sternly corrected Peter: “Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God’s thoughts but human thoughts.” After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them. Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? What will people give in exchange for their lives? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Human One will be ashamed of that person when he comes in the Father’s glory with the holy angels.” The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.

“Take Up Your Cross” — Edward Broughton; words by Charles W. Everest, alt. “Take up your cross,” the Savior said, “if you would my disciple be; deny yourself, the world forsake, and humbly follow after me.” Take up your cross, let not its weight fill your weak spirit with alarm; Christ’s strength shall bear your spirit up, and brace your heart and nerve your arm. Take up your cross, nor heed the shame, nor let your foolish pride rebel; your Lord for you the cross endured, to save your soul from death and hell. Take up your cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down; for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

“Who Is Jesus?” — Jeffrey Honoré; words by Timothy Dudley-Smith Who is Jesus? Friend of sinners, whom in love the Father gave; born within a borrowed stable, laid within a borrowed grave; Son of God and son of Mary, Son of Man to seek and save. Who is Jesus? Man of sorrows, see his glory all put by; Prince of life and sinners’ ransom stumbles forth to bleed and die; Lamb of God and Love immortal hangs upon the cross on high. Who is Jesus? Risen Savior! to his Father’s throne restored; first-born of the new creation, sun and star and saints’ reward; Prince of glory, King of ages, Christ the ever-living Lord.

Meetings & Rehearsals SEPTEMBER 15 – SEPTEMBER 22
We are better together, most especially when we can be present for each other in the tough times. It is in this spirit that we are forming a support group for individuals with prostate cancer - if you have just been diagnosed and are being treated, if you are a survivor, or if you are somewhere in-between, join us on Wednesday, September 18 from 5:30 to 7 pm in the Red Room (1010, COC). Holistic care makes a huge difference in helping individuals with cancer achieve levels of remission or enhanced functionality, and we are glad to offer a way to connect spiritually as a way to support each other. Please come and bring a support person if you would like. Contact Kathy Thiel (kthiel@asburyfirst.org or 271-1050 x106) or David Strong (dstrong@asburyfirst.org or 271-1050 x110) with any questions.

As reported to the congregation two weeks ago, funding for the Community Outreach Center (COC) is facing a shortfall of $80,000 to continue our current services to those in need. So far, we have raised nearly $20,000 which means we still have $60,000 to go to close the gap. We can cross the finish line together.
Your gift will help the Community Outreach Center DO MORE GOOD! Give what you can or pick a level of your choice: $1,000 level (looking for 30) $500 level (looking for 40) $250 level (looking for 50) Please donate online, by Venmo or by check, and designate COC in the memo line or comment box. Thank you for helping us to Do More Good. The goal is to bridge this gap by the end of October.
Your gift of $250 provides 140 hot meals for neighbors who depend on our Dining and Caring Center. Your investment of $500 provides 62 bags of groceries delivered to poor neighborhoods and refugee families. Your $1,000 gift provides 50 warm blankets for those in need or who have lost everything in a fire.
