September 8, 2024
FIRST TIME HERE We are so glad you are joining worship today, whether in person or online. Please sign in on the red fellowship pad and pass it down your pew. Our hope is to get to know you better and help you find your place within this community. You can also drop an email to info@asburyfirst.org. If you’re participating offsite, check in through the website or take a picture and post it on social media using #asburyfirstathome. ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL Large print bulletins and hymnals are available from the ushers. A hearing loop is available for those who have hearing aids with T switches, and you may also request earphones from the ushers to aid you in hearing the service. The screens located in the sanctuary now display the service stream to aid in visibility. Please help us welcome differently-abled worshipers and visitors by not interacting with or distracting service animals. Need prayer? Share your prayer requests by filling out one of the prayer cards found in the pews or by emailing prayers@asburyfirst.org. All requests are prayed over by the Ministers and Intercessory Prayer Team. Children Children are a sacred gift, and they are welcome in worship. Children will be invited forward during worship for a Children’s Time. Following this, children age 4 through 5th grade are invited to go with the children’s educators for Sunday School or return to their caretaker for the remainder of the service. I was glad when they said unto me, “Let us go up to the house of the Lord.” And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. (Words: Psalm 122:1-2; Music: Carl Johengen)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. Come, let us draw near to the One who breaks down barriers and extends grace to all. We come with hearts open to the healing touch of Christ. Jesus welcomes those who seek him, regardless of background or circumstance. We come, trusting in God’s power to make all things new. Let us worship the One who opens our ears to hear and our mouths to speak praise. We come, ready to proclaim God’s goodness.

Prayer of Confession
Holy One, we confess that we often fail to see the breadth of your love and the reach of your grace. We limit your power by our doubts and restrict your mercy by our prejudices. Forgive us for the times we have turned away from those who are different from us. Open our hearts, Lord, to the fullness of your love and teach us to embrace all our neighbors. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
The mercy of God knows no bounds and is offered freely to all. In Christ, we are healed, forgiven, and restored. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
Scripture Mark 7:24-37 Common English Bible
Jesus left that place and went into the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know that he had entered a house, but he couldn’t hide. In fact, a woman whose young daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard about him right away. She came and fell at his feet. The woman was Greek, Syrophoenician by birth. She begged Jesus to throw the demon out of her daughter. He responded, “The children have to be fed first. It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” But she answered, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” “Good answer!” he said. “Go on home. The demon has already left your daughter.” When she returned to her house, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone. After leaving the region of Tyre, Jesus went through Sidon toward the Galilee Sea through the region of the Ten Cities. Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly speak, and they begged him to place his hand on the man for healing. Jesus took him away from the crowd by himself and put his fingers in the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. Looking into heaven, Jesus sighed deeply and said, “Ephphatha,” which means, “Open up.” At once, his ears opened, his twisted tongue was released, and he began to speak clearly. Jesus gave the people strict orders not to tell anyone. But the more he tried to silence them, the more eagerly they shared the news. People were overcome with wonder, saying, “He does everything well! He even makes the deaf to hear and gives speech to those who can’t speak.” The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.

“My Great Redeemer’s Praise” — Thomas Jarman (1776-1861); words by Charles Wesley O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! Jesus! the name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease, 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life and health and peace. My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name.

“God, Who Built This Wondrous Planet” — Carl Johengen; words by Jaroslav J. Vajda God, who built this wondrous planet and all worlds beyond these bounds, Crown your work and ours with blessing, meet us here on hallowed ground. With your glory fill this temple, here be sought and here be found. Christ, you build a holy structure that, like you, outlasts the earth; Chosen for yourself, you make us living stones of priceless worth, Home, where prodigals, returning, celebrate with holy mirth. Spirit, make your church a beacon beaming hope where hoping wanes, Daily in these stones creating life where death no longer reigns, And in grateful hearts forgiven spark the love the world but feigns. Living Father, living children, living servants, living Lord; Living Savior, living Body, living members, living Word; Living Spirit, living temple, we adoring, you adored!

We are each born of God, and when we die, we return to God. Death is a part of our earthly lives, and yet it is not our favorite part. When someone we love dies, our lives change forever. We grieve and we question and we suffer. Asbury First is offering bereavement support in the form of group meetings beginning this October. If someone in your life has died and you would like to be part of a loving and supportive group of others who are grieving the death of a loved one, please contact Rev. Kathy Thiel about joining a bereavement support group. Please call (585) 271-1050 x106 or email kthiel@asburyfirst.org. God Bless You.
If you are interested in joining Asbury First, we will be having four New Members classes in the next several months. Thank you to those who have immediately responded with donations to cover the financial gap at our new Community Outreach Center at Asbury First. Asbury First has a heart for Outreach and we’re appealing to that heart now to meet this need. The $70,000 gap is shrinking, but there’s more work to be done to close this gap by year’s end. When you consider making a donation to the COC, remember that for every $1 donated to Asbury First Outreach, $2 comes out in the form of goods and services. Going forward, our annual pledge drive will offer the option to designate a portion of your annual pledge to Outreach. Whether you donate online, by Venmo or by check, please indicate in a memo line or comment box if you would like a portion of your donation to specifically support the COC. Thank you for helping us to Do More Good. If currently employed, your company may have a matching gift program for which your gift to Outreach programs at Asbury would qualify. If you need to make a Required Minimum Distribution from your investments at year’s end, please consider the COC as a recipient.
