Prelude
Prélude in C Minor — Théodore Dubois Interlude in E flat Major — Théodore Dubois
Introit
This is the threefold truth on which our faith depends; and with this joyful cry our worship begins and ends: Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again! (Words: Fred Pratt Green; Tune: Acclamations, Jack Schrader)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. We gather today as one body, united in Christ. We come with hearts open, willing to unite with one another in God’s love. Each of us brings unique gifts, given by God. Together, we strive to grow in faith and become mature and complete in Christ. Let us stand firm in our calling. We support and strengthen one another, embodying Christ's love. Joined together, each part doing its work, we are greater than the sum of our parts. In love and unity, we worship and serve together—thanks be to God!

Scripture Ephesians 4:1-16 Translation: "The Message" by Eugene Peterson
In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences. You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness. But that doesn’t mean you should all look and speak and act the same. Out of the generosity of Christ, each of us is given his own gift. The text for this is, He climbed the high mountain, He captured the enemy and seized the plunder, He handed it all out in gifts to the people. (cont'd)

Prayer of Confession
Holy One, we come today admitting to the times we have failed to live as the body of Christ. You know and we know that we have allowed divisions to separate us and pride to overshadow our calling. We have not always been gentle, patient, or kind, nor have we always worked for unity. Forgive us for the ways we have failed to live out our calling as the body of Christ. Help us to be united in purpose, growing together in love and maturity, reflecting your love to the world. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
In the name of the Christ, we are forgiven and restored. We celebrate the grace that makes us whole. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
To Renew Commitment
Invitation to Discipleship, Membership, and Commitment
We are delighted you have joined us and ask that you sign and pass the ritual of friendship pad from the center aisle down the pew. We invite you to prayerfully consider making a gift to support the everyday ministries and operations of this church, allowing us to live into our vision to Do More Good. There are multiple ways to make a gift to Asbury First: Cash/Check—We welcome you to send a gift by check in the mail or place your cash/check gift in the offering plate as it is passed to you. Text to Give—You may give a gift with a debit/credit card by texting the dollar amount to 206-222-1050. Online—Online giving is available on our website at asburyfirst.org/give. Venmo—You may give a gift through Venmo by finding “@givingasburyfirst” or by scanning the QR code to the right.
Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment.
Scripture (cont'd)
Is it not true that the One who climbed up also climbed down, down to the valley of earth? And the One who climbed down is the One who climbed back up, up to highest heaven. He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. No prolonged infancies among us, please. We’ll not tolerate babes in the woods, small children who are easy prey for predators. God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love. The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, (or Our God) who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

“They'll Know We Are Christians” — words and music by Peter Scholtes; arr. Mark Hayes We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord; We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord; And we pray that all unity may one day be restored. (Refrain:) And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love. We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand; And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land. (Refrain) We will work with each other, we will work side by side; We will work with each other, we will work side by side; And we'll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride. (Refrain) All praise to the Father, from whom all things come; And all praise to Christ Jesus, his only Son. And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one. (Refrain)
Prayer of Dedication
Loving and giving God, we offer these gifts to you as a testament of our commitment to offer ourselves to you. May these offerings be used to bring hope and healing and restoration of your world. Bless each gift and giver. Guide us in using these resources to reflect your love in all we do. in the name of your Christ, we pray. Amen.
Sermon
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith:
The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. ... And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Eucharistic Acclamations — based on the American folk hymn Land of Rest
...Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.

The Lord's Supper
Please follow the ushers' direction and leave your pew via the side aisles. Step forward to receive the bread. Once you have received the bread, move toward the center aisle. There you will have the option of receiving the juice: — by intinction (dipping the bread in the cup), or — by taking a small cup from the tray, drinking the juice, and placing the empty cup in the basket provided. Return to your pew via the center aisle.

Prayer After Receiving
God of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off, you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the way to you. This involves soliciting sponsors, signing up hosts and guests, coordinating printed materials and other tasks. DOCUMENT PROCURER Outreach would like to make its printed materials more accessible to non-English speakers. We need someone to talk with various ministries to identify documents that would be most useful for translating into other languages. You’ll work closely with Outreach leadership to do this. Actual translation will come later.
If any of these speak to you, don't be shy! Send an email to the Outreach Committee Chairwoman, Diana Carter at dianalouisecarter@gmail.com or call at (585) 732-7224
Outreach Committee Member: seeking someone available to meet monthly (and additionally for subcommittee assignments) who has a heart for Outreach. The ideal candidate would have some experience in a non-proft organization, and would be able to make a two-year commitment to the committee.
GREETER COORDINATOR Evarts UR Well Clinic is in need of a Greeter Coordinator to assist with scheduling and supporting greeters at our Outreach Center. Contact Mary Scahill at (585) 705-6112 or mscahill404@gmail.com
The Outreach Committee is seeking volunteers to help us Do More Good. 1) We have an opening on the Outreach Committee itself. This position involves monthly meetings and additional time for subcommittee assignments. Anyone with a heart for Outreach would be welcome, but we are particularly interested in someone with experience in a non-profit organization. Our hope is that you can make a two-year commitment. 2) Assistance with organizing Dining In for Outreach, our largest event. If you like throwing parties, this one's for you. The 2024 event is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 12, so this is a relatively short-term commitment. Meetings are to be determined by the committee. Duties include soliciting sponsors, signing up hosts to hold dinners in their homes, coordinating printed materials to share with the homes, organizing a general appetizer or dessert event before or after the dinners, and collecting donations at the end. 3) Finally, we are seeking a detail-oriented person – possibly a candidate for Eagle Scout or Gold Award – to gather documents, forms and other printed materials used in Outreach with an eventual goal of translating them for non-English speakers. This project would involve speaking with various Outreach ministries about written texts that are seen or used by our neighbors to seek help or understand the services at Asbury. This self-starting person would work closely with the chair of the Outreach Committee and/or the COC director to plan and carry out the census and gathering of written materials. Optionally, the researcher could be involved in the next step: arranging for translation of the documents. Interested individuals may reach out to Outreach Committee Chairwoman Diana Carter at (585) 732-7224 or dianalouisecarter@gmail.com
