COVID-19 Guidelines Our current COVID-19 safety policy is “masking by choice.” Everyone on our campus may choose to wear a mask at any time as an additional precaution to protect themselves and those around them. We will respect everyone’s choice in this matter. To learn more about the new policy, visit asburyfirst.org/news/2022/6/june-covid-masking-update. FIRST TIME HERE We are so glad you are joining us, whether in person or online. If you’re out there watching, check in through the website or take a picture and post it on social media using #asburyfirstathome. If you're in the pews, please sign in on the red fellowship pad and pass it down your pew. Our hope is to get to know you better and help you find your place within our community. Additionally, drop us an email at info@asburyfirst.org. ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL Large print bulletins and hymnals are available from the ushers. A hearing loop is available for those who have hearing aids with T switches, and you may also request earphones from the ushers to aid you in hearing the service. The screens located toward the back of the sanctuary now display the service stream to aid in visibility. Need prayer? We invite you to share with us how we can be praying for you by emailing prayers@asburyfirst.org or by filling out one of our prayer cards found in the pews. All prayer requests are prayed over by our Ministers and Intercessory Prayer Team. Children We believe children are a sacred gift, and they are welcome in our worship. Children will be invited forward during worship for a Children’s Time. Following this, children ages 4 through 5th grade are invited to go with our children’s educators for further enrichment or return to their caretaker for the remainder of the service. Last Sunday after Epiphany BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Prelude
“Jesus Loves Me” — arr. Michael Fischer “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” — arr. Hal Leonard “Give Me Jesus” — arr. Mark Hayes “Rock of Ages” — arr. John Turner
Introit
All glory be unto you, Lord. All glory we give to you. All honor we give unto you, Lord. All glory, all honor, all praise, we give them unto you. Amen. (Words and Music: Michael Kenneth Ross)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. The Word of the Lord came, hope for all people cradled in his arms. The Word of the Lord comes, calling us out of our comfort zones, to go where grace is needed most. The Word of the Lord will come, gathering all who thirst into one community of God’s realm.
*Processional Hymn
#428 "For the Healing of the Nations” (Note: Online users may click the link of the title to access the hymn)
*Greeting and Passing of the Peace
*Gathering Song
#333 "I'm Goin' a Sing When the Spirit Says Sing", vv. 1, 4
The community gathers As the community gathers, may the music of the prelude draw your hearts and minds to God.
Scripture Jonah 3:1-6
The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
Prayer of Confession
Let us turn to the One who longs to hear us, trusting that God will forgive us. We have let comfort lull us into complacency, Steadfast God. Remind us that following Jesus means we must step out in faith. We have let our privilege convince us that we have everything we need. Remind us that we have nothing without your grace. We have let social media delude us into thinking we have community. Remind us that our community is where your people gather and do your work, Loving God. Forgive us for the many ways we drag our feet, God of grace.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
God hears our words, God sees our changed hearts, God's steadfast love is poured out upon us! We will trust in God, in whom our salvation rests. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3, alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Today’s worship includes pieces by two giants of the African-American music world, composers HALL JOHNSON and WILLIAM DAWSON. Hall Johnson (1888-1970) achieved incredible success as a performer, composer, and choral conductor over his long career. Born in Athens, Georgia, his father was a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. His musical talent was apparent from a young age, studying piano with his sister and teaching himself to play violin. Johnson went on to earn a B.A. in music at the University of Pennsylvania, and studied at the University of Southern California and the Juilliard School. By his mid-twenties, living in Harlem with his wife, Johnson quickly established himself as a performer. Eager to stretch his creative muscles, he formed a choir that later became the Hall Johnson Negro Choir, giving live and radio performances, and winning a recording contract with RCA Victor. Johnson took his choir to Los Angeles to sing in a film; He would remain there until the mid-1940s participating in or arranging music for a number of popular motion pictures. He later returned to New York where he formed the Festival Negro Choir of New York, and began coaching high-profile singers in the singing of Spirituals; these included Marian Anderson, Harry Belafonte, and Shirley Verrett. He is widely remembered today for his spiritual arrangements for voice and piano, one of which is “His Name So Sweet” which is sung today by Kayla Sconiers. William Levi Dawson (1899-1990) enjoyed an equally long and storied career. He was the eldest of seven children from a poor family; at age 13, he left home to study music at the Tuskegee Institute under school president Booker T. Washington. Dawson paid his tuition working as a music librarian and as laborer in the school’s Agricultural Division. He was a member of Tuskegee’s band and orchestra, composing and traveling extensively with the Tuskegee Singers. By the time he graduated from the high school division in 1921 he had learned to play several instruments. He went on to study at Washburn College in Topeka and the Horner Institute of Fine Arts in Kansas City, where in 1925 he graduated with a B.A. in music theory and composition. He had already been supporting himself as the director of music at Kansas Vocational College in Topeka, and at Lincoln High School in Kansas City. Dawson moved on to Chicago to study composition at the American Conservatory of Music, earning his master’s degree. In 1930, Dawson accepted Tuskegee Institute’s invitation to direct its School of Music, a position he held until his retirement in 1955. As director, Dawson modernized the department and hired gifted faculty. Tuskegee’s 100-voice choir became a world-class ensemble best known for its headline-making performances at the grand opening of the Radio City Music Hall and at the White House. In 1946, the choir broke the race barrier at Washington D.C.’s Constitution Hall. Dawson’s best orchestral and choral works were based on spirituals, like his “Negro Folk Symphony” (1934), which was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra. His most popular compositions are his many spiritual arrangements for choirs which include “Ain’-a That Good News”, sung today by the Sanctuary Choir.

ON THE COVER: "Untitled"
Black History Month
Introducing Lavonne Barfield of LoveOn Artwork Originals. Lavonne is a God-gifted, multifaceted artist who believes art is a form of communicating with God, art is helpful, art is healing, art is necessary, and art is love — and everything is always better with a little love on it! Adopted and raised in Rochester NY, Lavonne has a special appreciation for the incomparable city “the Young Lion of the West”. Growing up, Lavonne never thought being a professional artist was an option what with no true representation in her sphere of influence. Yet, knowing God gave her special gifts, she devoted her talents to helping others advance their visions while creating in her spare time. After graduating from college at SUNY Buffalo University she tried the traditional route of working in human services to becoming a licensed insurance agent, yet felt unfulfilled like a crawling caterpillar looking for its next meal. Fast-forward a few years, and in 2016 she took a leap of faith and began the inner work (she calls her cave/cocoon season) — the metamorphosis to become the true creative, who was created to create by the Creator. Transitioning out of the mundane routine, she stepped away from full-time employment and became a part-time substitute teacher in the Rochester City school district. She sought out contractual work freelancing with after-school programs and community agencies facilitating art programs and selling some of her own masterpieces through word of mouth. While growing in popularity and esteem as an artist and creator of LoveOn Artwork Originals, doors began to open. From on-the-spot hiring at a private art firm as the Assistant Art Director, she learned the business side of the art world. Lavonne has been a part of some amazing projects and works. She joyfully serves at her local house of worship (Glory House International) as a Creative Consultant, Director of SOW Children’s Ministry, and is a faithful member of the worship ministry. She is also an alumni member of STAR Debutante Inc., WOC (Woman of Color) Art Collaboration, Art and Justice Initiatives, RCSD Beautification projects, and more. Lavonne’s work has been exhibited throughout Rochester from the Memorial Art Gallery to the walls of City Hall. As a creative she contributes to spreading the love of Christ through the arts and education system — a special intersection which could only be orchestrated by God. It has truly become the wind beneath her budding wings. Not limited to visual arts, Lavonne is also a talented singer, and a spoken word poet — a true multi-disciplinary creative. It is important for her to pour back into the community, especially the generations of tomorrow, and believes she will impact the world with agape love. This is because love is helpful, love is healing, love is necessary, love is art, and God is Love. Forever evolving, we are excited to see what form of expression she ventures into next. This is just the beginning for Lavonne Barfield of LoveOn Artwork Originals. Lavonne was also in the very first cohort of students in the Studio 678 Photo Club program at Flower City Arts Center back in 1999. The program is now entering its 25th consecutive year as a 24-session after-school program for students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades from the Rochester City School District. Studio 678 is free to the students thanks to the generosity of many donors. After going on to become an accomplished artists in her own right, Lavonne generously comes to the Center to give back to the students in the program by lending her gifts, sharing experiences, and facilitating group projects. One such project was an inter-generational mural that Lavonne drew and painted with the help of students.
