Introit
Sing, O sing unto the Lord; sing a new song, declare God’s glory among the nations. (Words: Psalm 96; Tune: Jack Goode)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. The Spirit of the Lord is upon us! We are called to bring good news to the poor. The Spirit of the Lord is with us! We are sent to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind. The Spirit of the Lord empowers us! We are commissioned to let the oppressed go free and declare the time of God’s favor. Come, let us worship the God who brings liberation and hope! We come, ready to hear God’s Word and live out God’s call.

Third Sunday after Epiphany
Prayer of Confession
God of justice and mercy, we confess that we have not always lived according to your will. In times of political change and leadership that challenges our values, we have sometimes responded with apathy or despair. We have failed to stand up for the oppressed, to speak out against injustice, and to act as agents of your love in the world. Forgive us for our complacency and fear. Empower us by your Spirit to resist injustice, to protect the vulnerable, and to work tirelessly for peace and equity. May we follow the example of Jesus, who proclaimed good news to the poor and freedom for the captives. In his name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, bringing good news of God’s mercy and love. We are set free to live as witnesses to God’s justice and peace. Amen.
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Scripture Luke 4:14-30 (New Revised Standard Version, updated)
Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding region. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’ ” (cont'd)
Scripture (cont'd)
And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months and there was a severe famine over all the land, yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many with a skin disease in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.
Anthem Jordan Bachmann, Soloist
"He Comes to Us as One Unknown" — C. Hubert H. Parry; words by Timothy Dudley-Smith He comes to us as one unknown, a breath unseen, unheard; As though within a heart of stone, or shriveled seed in darkness sown, A pulse of being stirred, a pulse of being stirred. He comes when souls in silence lie and thoughts of day depart; Half seen upon the inward eye, a falling star across the sky Of night within the heart, of night within the heart. He comes to us in sound of seas, the ocean's fume and foam; Yet small and still upon the breeze, a wind that stirs the tops of trees, A voice to call us home, a voice to call us home. He comes in love as once he came by flesh and blood and birth; To bear within our mortal frame a life, a death, a saving Name, For ev'ry child of earth, for ev'ry child of earth. He comes in truth when faith is grown; believed, obeyed, adored: The Christ in all the scriptures shown, as yet unseen, but not unknown, Our Savior and our Lord, our Savior and our Lord.
Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Doxology Hymnal #95
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*Prayer of Dedication
Generous God, we dedicate these gifts to your work of healing and liberation. May they bring good news to the poor, release to the captive, and hope to the brokenhearted. Use what we offer to make your kingdom visible on earth, and use us as vessels of your Spirit to share your love and grace. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

"We Are Called” — words and music by Becki Slagle Mayo, incorporating the hymn St. Thomas, Aaron Williams, 1770 Arise, arise, O church of God! We are called to be God’s people, going forth in love and grace. We are called to shine in darkness as we journey from this place. We are called to serve each other, called to be God’s hands and feet. We are called to show compassion, sharing Christ with all we meet. We are called to love our neighbor, called to help a world in need. We are called to be disciples, sharing Christ in word and deed. Arise, O church of God, proclaim in one accord the story of redeeming love, the message of our Lord. We are called to be God’s people, going forth in love and grace. We are called to shine in darkness as we journey from this place.
These persons have shared their gifts today for the glory of God. If you felt moved by what they offered, why not take a moment following worship to let them know. If you feel moved to participate with your gifts in worship, please contact Andrew Hunt at worship@asburyfirst.org.
