Introit
‘Lift up your hearts!’ We lift them, Lord, to thee; here at thy feet none other do we see: ‘Lift up your hearts!’ Even so with one accord we lift them up, we lift them to the Lord. (Words: Henry Montagu Butler; Tune: Chiswell, Gustav Holst)
*Call to Worship
All are invited to read the bold-faced type; the reader will read the unbolded type. We gather to celebrate the God who creates and calls us to community. We come, bringing our diverse gifts, united by the Spirit. God calls us to honor the dignity and worth of every person. We come, inspired by the dream of justice and equality for all. The Spirit moves among us, empowering us to work for change. We come, ready to embrace our call as agents of love and reconciliation. Let us worship the God who makes us one body and calls us to build a better world. We come, seeking to follow Christ’s example of love, mercy, and justice.

Verse 1: Oh, when the world is silent, I hear music in the air; Oh, when the world is silent, I hear music in the air; Oh, when the world is silent, I hear music in the air; there must be a God somewhere. Verse 2: And when I'm feeling lonely, I hear music in the air; And when I'm feeling lonely, I hear music in the air; And when I'm feeling lonely, I hear music in the air; there must be a God somewhere. Prayer of Confession
God of justice and compassion, we confess that we have not always lived as one body. Too often, we allow divisions of race, class, and creed to separate us, failing to honor the gifts you have given to all. We are slow to challenge systems of oppression and quick to turn away from those in need. Forgive us when we neglect our calling to love one another as you have loved us. By your Spirit, guide us into unity and help us to use our gifts to build a world of equity, peace, and reconciliation. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Words of Assurance
The Spirit of God is at work within us, calling us to unity and empowering us for good. In Christ, we are forgiven, set free to love, and called to serve. Thanks be to God!
*Gloria Hymnal #102, v. 3 alt.
All glory be to God, all praise and thanks be given; Whose Son and Spirit reign as one in highest Heaven; Our one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
To hear the word
Scripture 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 (The Message)
What I want to talk about now is the various ways God’s Spirit gets worked into our lives. This is complex and often misunderstood, but I want you to be informed and knowledgeable. Remember how you were when you didn’t know God, led from one phony god to another, never knowing what you were doing, just doing it because everybody else did it? It’s different in this life. God wants us to use our intelligence, to seek to understand as well as we can. For instance, by using your heads, you know perfectly well that the Spirit of God would never prompt anyone to say “Jesus be damned!” Nor would anyone be inclined to say “Jesus is Master!” without the insight of the Holy Spirit. God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful: wise counsel; clear understanding; simple trust; healing the sick; miraculous acts; proclamation; distinguishing between spirits; tongues; interpretation of tongues. All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when. The Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God.
A BOLD WITNESS
Anthem Sanctuary Choir
“Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” — Andrew Carter; words by Samuel Longfellow, alt. Holy Spirit, Truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine. Voice of God, and inward Light, wake my spirit, clear my sight. Holy Spirit, Love divine, glow within this heart of mine. Kindle every high desire, purify me with your fire. Holy Spirit, Power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine. Boldly may I always live, bravely serve and gladly give. Holy Spirit, Peace divine, still this restless heart of mine. Speak to calm this tossing sea, grant me your tranquility. Holy Spirit, Joy divine, gladden now this heart of mine. In the desert ways I sing, spring, O living Water, spring!
Children's Time
Children of all ages are invited to join us in this special moment.
Lord's Prayer
Our Father (or Our God), who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

“Song of Witness” — – Donna Butler Douglas; words based on St. Teresa of Avila Christ has no hands on earth but our hands, to guide and point the way, to hold a hand in need. Christ has no hands on earth but our hands. So Lord, let me be your hands. Christ has no feet on earth but our feet, to walk a different path, and follow where he leads. Christ has no feet on earth but our feet. So Lord, let me be your feet. My heart is filled with gladness when I look around and see the wonder of salvation and how he uses me. Christ uses me. Christ has no witness but through our lives, to show the world his grace, and share his bountiful love. Christ has no witness but through our lives. So Lord, use my life today.

God of unity and justice, we dedicate these gifts to your work of love in the world. Use what we bring to heal divisions, lift up the oppressed, and build communities of compassion and peace. May our lives reflect the vision of your kingdom, where justice flows like a mighty river and all are welcomed in love. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.
